West Ham snapped a 53-game streak vs Wolves – something they’ve not done since Lopetegui but Nuno Espirito have accomplished his mission

West Ham snapped a 53-game streak vs Wolves – something they’ve not done since Lopetegui

The scoreline wasn’t the only impressive aspect of West Ham United’s 4-0 shellacking of Premier League basement boys Wolverhampton Wanderers on Friday night.

OK, the Hammers overperformed their ‘XG’ considerably at the London Stadium – Konstantinos Mavropanos and Taty Castellanos scored twice apiece – but you make your own luck, as they say.

West Ham United scored those four goals from a hefty 18 shots on goal. When you create as many shooting opportunities as this – an unplayable Jarrod Bowen was ‘back at his brilliant best’ with two assists and three key passes – then you are giving yourself the best possible chance of getting on the scoresheet at least once.

Where does the skipper rank among our biggest Premier League LEGENDS?

This was the Hammers’ biggest home win in the Premier League since Danny Ings fired David Moyes’ side past Nottingham Forest in 2023.

This was also the first time West Ham had recorded at least 18 shots in a top-flight game since beating – funnily enough – Wolves in December 2024.

Tomas Soucek and the aforementioned Bowen fired the Londoners past their Black Country visitors that night 16 months ago. Briefly easing the pressure on a soon-to-be-fired Julen Lopetegui in the process.

53 more Premier League matches came and went before they dealt Wolves another London Stadium defeat in April 2026.

    MORE WEST HAM STORIES

The stats show that West Ham average only 10.5 shots per game in the 2025/26 campaign. A tally of 18, then, was a marked improvement.

Castellanos added Wolves to Real Madrid and Juventus’ scalps; a man for the big occasion stepping up in West Ham’s biggest match of the entire season. And shortly after Dinos Mavropanos ended an 86-game wait for a goal from a centre-back, the Greek giant now has three in three.

Bowen is in top form again, Crysencio Summerville is back from injury, Pablo Felipe finally has a ‘goal contribution’ to his name, Castellanos is hitting his stride, and Mavropanos provides an all-new threat from set-piece situations.

Watch out Crystal Palace, Monday’s opponents at Selhurst Park. Nuno’s attacking armoury is suddenly stocked with weapons.
