Benjamin Sesko’s 96th minute equaliser might have shattered West Ham hearts during their dramatic draw with Manchester United, but Nuno Espirito Santo’s frustrations lied at the other end of the London Stadium pitch.

Speaking after the Hammers dropped two invaluable points and missed the chance to go level with Nottingham Forest in 17th, the manager’s reaction was, well, as you would expect.

Nuno Espirito Santo loved the discipline and the determination from a West Ham United side who, until Sesko flicked an outrageous finish past an otherwise well-protected Mads Hermansen, produced a performance so supremely organised it bore a resemblance to his Nottingham Forest’s European-chasing outfit of 2024/25.

Tomas Soucek converted a Jarrod Bowen cross just after half-time to give the hosts the lead.

Both before and after that 50th minute opener, Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Konstantinos Mavropanos and Axel Disasi excelled, barely putting a foot wrong between them. El Hadji Malick Diouf even kept Amad Diallo quiet; an achievement indeed for a youngster who has faced concerns over his defensive qualities since arriving from Slavia Prague.

Nuno had few complaints about his backline. The Hammers have conceded only one goal in over 180 minutes since Disasi arrived and Hermansen returned.

The former Wolves and Tottenham boss was frustrated, though, about the opportunities his side missed to kill off the game in transition when Michael Carrick’s side were camped in the visiting half.

“We competed really well. We played a good game against a good team,” Nuno said on TNT Sports. “First half, not many chances. We started really well the second-half, we scored and defended properly until the last minute.

“It’s a tough, tough team to stop. I think the boys did really well.

“[But] we can do more. We should have killed the game. We had a couple of counter-attacks which would have put the game to bed. We have to keep on going.”

Adama Traore, on his home debut, could not find a way past a sprawling Leny Yoro as he bore down on Lammens’ goal. Fellow substitute Callum Wilson was also denied by the big Belgian one-v-one, although the flag would later go up for offside moments before Sesko popped up to divert a hopeful Bryan Mbeumo cross beyond a helpless Hermansen.

What did you make of his goalscoring heroics?

A better timed run, a little bit more composure, and a fourth successive London Stadium victory over the Red Devils would surely have been theirs.

“It’s disappointing because of the lead that we had,” adds Nuno, whose side have now given away a league-high 20 points from winning positions. “But today, we showed that we are here to fight and believe. We have to keep working hard. The support of the fans was amazing.

“It’s a tough moment, but let’s keep going because we showed today that this is the way we should compete every match.”

“That’s what we have been trying to do; fix our problems. We can see some improvement. More ambition to keep a clean sheet and the desire from the boys to stop the ball going [in the goal].”
