4 years after leaving Rangers, £37m star is now far better than Skov Olsen

Long gone are the days of Russell Martin at Rangers. Ibrox is now home to Danny Rohl and he has transformed the Glaswegian side since arriving.
They were sitting deep in mid-table mediocrity when the 36-year-old walked through the doors. Now, they are challenging for the Premiership title again. A first league crown since Steven Gerrard potentially awaits.
It’s safe to say things look rosier now with the Gers having lost just once since Christmas, a 3-1 defeat at the hands of Porto, which is certainly nothing to be ashamed of.

How Skov Olsen has performed since signing for Rangers
It would be fair to say that the Dane has had a rather hit or miss start to his Ibrox career after arriving as Rangers’ landmark signing during the winter transfer window.
He started against Dundee and Hibernian in the Premiership before scoring his first goal for the club in that 5-1 win over Killie. During that game, it felt like the winger had arrived in Scotland, starting to showcase why he was such an exciting signing.

That said, it’s time to be patient. It’s very rare that a winter arrival hits the ground running immediately and you can forgive him for needing a period of matches to get up to speed.
The fact of the matter is that the wide man has not played much football this term. Before moving to Scotland, the 26-year-old had played just eight games and 361 minutes in the Bundesliga for Wolfsburg. He had not played more than 45 minutes in a game since September.
For Skov Olsen, he’s almost undergoing something of a pre-season right now and while things have started slowly, it would be a surprise if he didn’t start to really motor in the forthcoming weeks, emulating great Rangers forwards of the past.

Think Ryan Kent, think Malick Tillman, think Vaclav Cerny of recent times. All of them are the gold standard that Skov Olsen must aim for. They’d surely rather that than the Amad Diallo spell.
Former Rangers loanee is now better than Skov Olsen
The likes of Kent, Tillman and Cerny have all left Ibrox behind now and it’s safe to say they have enjoyed and endured rather different careers since.
Tillman has raised his level so much that he’s now playing for Bayer Leverkusen in Germany but for Kent, he is without a club following a short spell at Seattle Sounders in 2025.

Signed by Manchester United in a whopping £37m deal as a teenager, one part of Amad’s development saw him loaned out to Rangers in the back end of the 2021/22 campaign. While he caught the eye in spurts, his numbers were not overly impressive.
He departed Ibrox with no assists and just three goals in 13 games. He did score on his debut. In fact, it took him just five minutes to find the back of the net. Great things were promised and while he did not fulfil his potential north of the border, he is now lighting it up for Man United.
Amad’s pathway to becoming a Premier League regular in England has been mightily impressive. Last season, he was celebrated as the “best player under Ruben Amorim” by Statman Dave during the Portuguese’s early reign, even though he was playing as a right wing-back.

Further heralded as an “explosive” winger by the same source, the Ivorian has only gone from strength to strength in recent years and his numbers are streets ahead of Strand Olsen, however impressive the Dane might well be.
Since Michael Carrick returned to Old Trafford, he’s now playing more of his football further forward again. Fielded as a right winger in each of the last four games, he’s played a crucial hand, registering 3.5 dribbles per game across those matches and two shots per game.

To put those numbers into context, Skov Olsen has registered just one dribble per match and 1.3 shots per appearance in the Scottish Premiership.
After that loan spell in Scotland, very few would have thought that Amad would go on to become a regular for United, but he’s now one of their most exciting players, even ending last season with 11 goals and ten assists.
