Pierce Charles set for summer transfer as Rangers ramp up pursuit
Pierce Charles set to leave Sheffield Wednesday amid Rangers links
According to talkSPORT, Charles is set to part ways with the Owls at the end of the season.
Despite having another year left on his deal, the Northern Ireland international wants to continue his career away from Hillsborough.
Wednesday’s relegation to League One was enough for the 20-year-old to decide that he no longer wants to continue at the club.
This is a major boost for Rohl, as the German is extremely keen on bringing the stopper to Ibrox this summer.
The Gers manager worked with Charles when he was the Sheffield Wednesday boss, and the duo share a good relationship.
Celtic are also admirers of the Northern Irish goalkeeper as they want to replace Kasper Schmeichel as the number one.
Who should Danny Rohl name as the next captain? Let us know in the comments!
What has Danny Rohl said about Charles?
Back in 2023, even before Charles had made his senior debut, he was admired by Rohl.
The German was happy with the way the then-teenager was training with the first team and he lauded him for his performances on the grass.
He said that if he kept up that level of training, he would be a first-team keeper in the near future, and that exactly is what happened.
Rohl stated: “He’s very good on the grass. He can play football, and he has a lot of solutions, which is something that I like. He’s trained very hard with the first team, and if he keeps training hard, then maybe there’s a chance to come in.
“But at the moment, I’m very happy with both of the goalkeepers that are here, and it’s a challenge. I think the goalkeeping group is strong, and that’s important for us.”
In March 2025, after handing Charles his senior debut, Rohl was so impressed by him that he went on record to claim that the club had two first-choice goalkeepers.
He told The Star: “We have James Beadle who deserves a lot of credit since he arrived last year in the relegation fight, he helped us to get a lot of points. On the other side we have our own goalkeeper with Pierce, who has worked very hard. He is now the number one for his national team and has improved a lot – he deserved it as well.
“In every other position we have competition, it’s normal, and we have two number ones now. They’ll fight every week for who is in goal and who is not, and I think with this mindset I want to see them. They’ll challenge each other, and we’ll see how ready Pierce is.”
