What could now ‘tip the balance’ on Eddie Howe’s future as Newcastle United manager

Eddie Howe’s long-term future at Newcastle United remains the subject of debate among supporters.

The Newcastle United manager is under pressure amongst certain sections of the support following a frustratingly inconsistent campaign.

Newcastle sit 11th in the Premier League table and while they are into the Carabao Cup semi-finals, few would doubt it has been a disappointing campaign thus far.

I’m fed up of hearing that Newcastle United are on the right track this season – prove me wrong! 🤔

Can’t see out a lead. Can’t come from behind. Can’t win away from home.

Can someone tell me what I’m supposed to be applauding?

Howe is perhaps the greatest manager in Newcastle history, but owners PIF want success at the club.

Even despite the success he brought, Howe has been criticised by Newcastle fans, so it’s certainly interesting to hear about the current thinking behind the scenes.

Eddie Howe safe at Newcastle United – but failing to make progress could see him sacked

According to The Chronicle, CEO David Hopkinson and sporting director Ross Wilson both back Howe and he will likely be given time to prove himself capable of turning this around.

However, the Newcastle United owners have always believed that the team are good enough to challenge for a place in the top six, as well as cup honours.

Howe is currently falling below that expectation but still has the support of those above him.

Hopkinson will not rush into any decisions and continues to survey the current state of play.

The report adds that Howe will be judged on what happens in the Carabao Cup and the Champions League, too.

Still, there is reportedly a feeling that failing to make any further in-roads in either competition and that “a collapsed quest for silverware” could “tip the balance”.

He said: “I know that there’s a 99.9% chance that I’m not going to see either [a new stadium or new in my position, but I’m still passionate about making sure it’s there for the future generations of Newcastle, whether that’s supporters or players.”

That is perhaps a reflection on the relatively transient life of a football manager, who generally do not stay at one club for large portions of their career.

Still, it was an interesting thing to say. Howe is a Newcastle United legend and it did seem strange that he would openly admit he may not stay that long.

Newcastle want to be the best club in the world by 2030 and, by Howe’s admission, he might not be here to see it.
