Newcastle United’s Mentality Issues Highlighted After Leverkusen Fightback

Anthony Gordon has expressed concerns about Newcastle United’s mindset after they squandered a lead against Bayer Leverkusen. In the Champions League match, Lewis Miley scored in the 74th minute to give Newcastle the advantage. Gordon had earlier equalised with a penalty after Bruno Guimaraes’ own goal. Despite his efforts, Gordon was frustrated as Newcastle failed to maintain their lead.

Newcastle’s recent performances have shown a pattern of losing leads late in games. They also let a lead slip against Marseille and drew 2-2 with Tottenham in the Premier League on December 2. Gordon remarked, “I don’t know [how the game slipped away] but it’s happening too many times, to be honest.” He emphasised the need for better defensive focus, particularly in the latter stages of matches.

Gordon Questions Newcastle's Mentality After Loss

Eddie Howe, Newcastle’s manager, acknowledged the team’s defensive shortcomings. He stated, “Goals happen in games, and we haven’t defended well enough today.” Howe noted that it was too easy for opponents to penetrate their defence, especially during crucial moments. He stressed the importance of belief and making things happen on the field.

Gordon’s performance has been noteworthy this season. He became only the second Newcastle player to score at least five goals in a single Champions League season since Alan Shearer achieved six goals in 2002-03. Despite this achievement, Gordon remains focused on improving the team’s overall performance.

Currently positioned 12th in their group, Newcastle is two points away from securing a top-eight spot that would ensure progression to the last 16. Howe commented on their standing: “It leaves us in a good position [to qualify in the top eight].” However, he acknowledged that upcoming matches against PSV and Paris Saint-Germain will be challenging.

The team must address its defensive issues if they hope to advance further. Both players and management recognise that maintaining concentration throughout matches is crucial for success at this level.

Newcastle’s journey continues with significant challenges ahead. The team aims to improve its mentality and defensive strategies as they prepare for future fixtures. With key games approaching, maintaining focus will be essential for achieving their objectives.
