The South Carolina Gamecocks are looking to win their first conference series of the season vs Arkansas.

The South Carolina Gamecocks are getting right back into conference play this weekend with a road trip out to Arkansas. The Gamecocks lost a heartbreaker last weekend as they lost to Oklahoma in extra innings with the series tied up at one a piece. Now they have a new opportunity against the No. 3 Razorbacks.

Brandon Stone (So. RHP) is the expected starter for South Carolina on Friday. He has a 1-1 record, a 3.42 ERA in 23.2 IP and 5 BB with 26 SO. Stone came in relief on Friday against Morehead State and struck out nine in a season best 5.2 innings pitched.

Arkansas is expected to pitch Landon Beidelschies (Jr. LHP), He has a 3-0 record, a 3.80 ERA in 21.1 IP and 5 BB with 22 SO.

• The Razorbacks won a two-game midweek series with Oral Roberts, winning Tuesday’s game, 4-1, and Wednesday’s contests, 16-0, in seven innings.
• Wehiwa Aloy was 3-for-4 with four RBI in Wednesday’s win. Wehiwa Aloy is hitting .402 with nine home runs and 28 RBI.
• Wehiwa’s brother, Kuhio, leads Arkansas with a .419 batting average and has eight home runs with 35 RBI.
• On the mound, Zach Root is 2-1 with a 4.44 ERA and 39 strikeouts in 24.1 innings pitched.
• Dave Van Horn is in his 23rd season as head coach at Arkansas. He has led the Razorbacks to seven College World Series appearances and three overall SEC titles.
• Paul Maineri and Van Horn have a combined 2,425 wins heading into Friday’s game.

Trey Hendrickson is looking to become the next star player to land a lucrative contract extension from the Cincinnati Bengals, and it sounds like he is willing to go to extreme lengths to accomplish that goal. The Bengals signed wide receivers Ja’Marr Chase and Tee Higgins to four-year contract extensions on Sunday. Chase will make roughly $40M per year with $112M guaranteed. The annual salary makes him the highest-paid non-quarterback in NFL history. Higgins’ deal is worth $115M, with the first two years fully guaranteed. Hendrickson was given permission to seek a trade earlier this offseason, but the Bengals have reportedly had discussions with his representatives about an extension. ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler said on “NFL Live” Wednesday that the two sides are not close to a deal, however. Hendrickson is said to be seeking more than $30M per year. He wants to be traded if the Bengals are not willing to give him that much money. The defensive end also has not ruled out refusing to play next season. “I do know this: I’ve heard this from several circles. Sometimes you hear players say, well like, I’ll just sit out this year, and it’s posturing. I actually think he would strongly consider sitting out and possibly do it if they don’t get a deal done. Because $16M this year is just not quite enough compared to where it should be,” Fowler said, via Dave Clark of the Cincinnati Enquirer. Hendrickson had 35 sacks over the past two seasons. He had 17.5 sacks each season and finished second in NFL Defensive Player of the Year voting this year. He is owed $15.8M in 2025, which is the final year of his contract. You can understand why Hendrickson wants to become one of the highest-paid pass rushers in the NFL, as his production backs it up. He has made the Pro Bowl in each of his four seasons with Cincinnati and has 57 sacks since he joined the team.

Vladimir Guerrero Jr.’s self-imposed deadline for an extension — the first full day of spring training — came and went more than a month ago, with no deal coming to fruition. Guerrero has left the door slightly cracked, indicating that while he doesn’t plan to negotiate any further, he’d be amenable to hearing the Jays out if they presented a new offer. That mindset is all the more notable now, given that Jays CEO Mark Shapiro flatly stated that he expects to eventually agree to an extension with the team’s star first baseman, via Sportsnet’s Shi Davidi. Said Shapiro: “…I guess my overarching feeling is one of optimism. I think we’re going to sign him. I think we’re going to extend him. The reason I feel that way is because we have such a clear alignment on the desired outcome. Vlad wants to play his whole career as a Toronto Blue Jay. We want him to end his career in a Blue Jays uniform to be a true legacy player for the Toronto Blue Jays. … Could be before free agency, could be during free agency, but I’m optimistic we will sign him.” Details surrounding both Guerrero’s asking price and the Blue Jays’ most recent offer have trickled out in the weeks since his deadline passed. Guerrero delivered nearly unrivaled batted-ball and bat speed grades last year while turning in a career-low 13.8% strikeout rate against a 10.3% walk rate that sits as the second-highest mark of his big league tenure. Per Statcast, he ranked in at least the 91st percentile of MLB hitters in barrel rate (91st percentile), bat speed (95th), hard-hit rate (97th), average exit velocity (98th), expected slugging percentage (98th) and expected wOBA (98th). No hitter in MLB had a higher maximum exit velocity or expected batting average. Guerrero has also been extremely durable, trailing only Marcus Semien in total plate appearances since 2021. In that same span, he’s tied with Yordan Alvarez for the sixth-most homers in MLB and also sits sixth with 405 runs driven in. Guerrero ranks 10th in batting average, 11th in on-base percentage and 13th in slugging percentage over the past four years. Defense and baserunning are obvious strikes against him, but Guerrero has been one of MLB’s 10 best hitters in the aggregate since Opening Day 2021 — including two seasons where he’s been flat-out elite. Based on Guerrero’s premium bat-to-ball skills, bat speed and batted-ball metrics, there’s little reason to expect him to markedly decline in the near future. As with any megadeal, the latter half of the contract is likely to be painful, but that’s generally accepted as the cost of doing business when signing star-caliber players of this nature in the heart of their prime.

The Houston Astros are in search of starting pitching help after Luis Garcia suffered a setback in his recovery from Tommy John surgery. Garcia has been shut down after experiencing elbow soreness. Because of that, Houston is a bit short on starting pitching depth. A team and trade partner that the Astros should seek out is the Philadelphia Phillies. After acquiring left-hander Jesus Luzardo from the Miami Marlins in the offseason, the Phillies rotation seems to be set. The projected rotation as of Thursday is Zack Wheeler, Aaron Nola, Ranger Suarez, Luzardo, and Christopher Sanchez. While a six-man rotation could always be used, the current odd man out is right-hander Taijuan Walker. A change of scenery may be needed for Walker, as his 2024 season was one to forget. He finished with a career-high ERA of 7.10 across 19 games pitched. Just once in the last four seasons has Walker posted a sub 3.50 ERA. Houston could reach out to Philadelphia and check on Walker’s availability and see if the Phillies would consider a trade. If so, here is what that deal could look like. Astros receive: RHP Taijuan Walker Phillies receive: RHP James Hicks (HOU No. 20 prospect) and C/1B Jancel Villarroel (HOU No. 29 prospect) This deal would provide Houston with starting pitching depth in place of Garcia as well as give the Phillies two prospects that they can have come up through their system in the next couple of years. Hicks is just 23 years old and Villarroel is only 20. Neither will be expected to make an impact at the major league level anytime soon.
