Rangers give permission to player to seal Ibrox exit before expiry of contract

Rangers’ summer exodus already appears to be underway, with them giving a player permission to leave for good.

Danny Rohl confirmed recently that he is being backed by the board going into the 2025/26 season, despite struggles in recent weeks.

The German will be given the funds for a rebuild that will involve showing a number of players the door in the coming weeks.

Derek Cornelius to leave early to join up with the Canada national team

Cornelius not returning to Rangers is something that we have reported several weeks ago, but he is now expected not to even train with the team until the end of the season.

According to TSN, the club have given permission to the Marseille defender to leave before the campaign ends.

That is because the 28-year-old is set to be a part of Canada’s World Cup squad, and the national team’s coaches want him to join up with the group as early as possible.

As Cornelius is not even part of the matchday squad for the Gers, it is understandable why he will be allowed to leave.

It is also safe to assume now that he has played his last game for the Ibrox outfit.

While his loan contract technically means he has to be at the club until the end of June, it can be waived by the club.

What has Danny Rohl said about Cornelius’ Rangers future?

In March, Rohl confirmed that the centre-back was training away from the first team as he was returning from injury.

The 28-year-old last played for Rangers in November, but did feature for Canada post that, leading to questions about the manager’s faith in him.

Rohl, at the time, said that he plans to have conversations with the defender surrounding his future, but those talks do not appear to have gone anywhere.

Cornelius will likely leave Marseille in the summer, but he will not be returning to Ibrox temporarily or on a permanent basis.

While Rangers are eyeing more central defenders in the coming weeks, the Canada international is no longer being considered as an option.

Rohl said on 20 March: “I had two conversations in the last couple of days with Derek. I will have a conversation when he comes back from the national team again.

“All these things between Derek and me, it’s between us, this is crucial. I have my principles; this is very important.”
