Better than Salah, Mbeumo and Semenyo; West Ham decision has been justified

Trademark tap-ins beyond the 90-minute mark against both Tottenham and Everton could prove to be the defining moments of another West Ham United ‘Great Escape’.
Wilson may not be able to start every game every week these days but, clearly, having a poacher of his pedigree waiting in the wings is never a bad thing. Putting the ‘super’ in ‘supersub’.
Callum Wilson has the best minutes-per-goal record at West Ham United

The former England international has only played 1,079 Premier League minutes, but he averages a goal every 179.
That is a superior record to a whole host of big-name forwards; from Manchester United’s £65 million marquee signing Bryan Mbeumo to Liverpool legend Mo Salah, and plenty in between.
In fact, Wilson’s record of a goal every 179 minutes is bettered by only twelve players, among those who have five or more against their name.
There are no prizes for guessing who sits at the summit; Erling Haaland scores every 112 games on average. Igor Thiago, who the Hammers will face on Saturday when they travel to Brentford, is hanging onto Haaland’s coattails.
Bournemouth sensation Eli Junior Kroupi leaves a sour taste in Hammers mouths. A player they came so close to signing in January 2025 – before the Cherries pulled those ‘multi-club’ strings – joins Haaland and Thiago on the podium.
The remainder of the top 12 includes Danny Welbeck, Benjamin Sesko, Zian Flemming, Lukas Nmecha, Hugo Ekitike, Beto and Viktor Gyokeres. Wilson is in pretty impressive company.

Jarrod Bowen and Alan Pardew full of praise for Wilson
To think, there were suggestions back in January that West Ham were considering terminating Callum Wilson’s short-term contract. Now, there is a very real argument to be made that they should be looking into extending it.
Alan Pardew would love to see Wilson back in claret and blue next season. The former manager is far from the only one making such a demand, as Wilson closes in on emulating Demba Ba’s record from 2010/11.
“I think most people in the stadium didn’t see that winner coming, but that’s what Callum does,” captain Jarrod Bowen said after he knocked the ball down for Wilson to fire past Jordan Pickford with 92 minutes on the clock against Everton.
He may have lost a yard of pace over the years – or yards, more realistically – but those instincts never leave you.
“[Callum] sniffs out a chance from nothing. He’s a credit to himself and has proven what he can do in the Premier League.
“For the winner, I was trying to get in at the back post, but I was probably too wide to head it at goal. I just tried to head it back across because you never know who is going to be there. It was like slow motion when the ball fell to [Callum].
“When it went in, it was pure relief.”
For a club with such a horrific record when it comes to recruiting centre-forwards, if Wilson keeps West Ham in the Premier League, the phrase ‘striker curse’ might be on the way out for a little while.
