Tomas Soucek and Jarrod Bowen agree to leave West Ham as a hero after ‘incredible’ Everton victory

Tomas Soucek and Jarrod Bowen agree about West Ham hero after ‘incredible’ Everton victory

‘Pure relief’ is how Jarrod Bowen chose to describe Callum Wilson’s 92nd minute decider during West Ham United’s vital, potentially season-defining 2-1 victory over Everton at the London Stadium.

The Hammers thought they had thrown it away when Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall fired a fizzing volley past Mads Hermansen in the 88th.

A potential collapse only made the eventual victory taste all the sweeter; Wilson pounced on a Bowen knockdown to create a reaction fairly seldom seen in the London Stadium era.

Everton at home felt like one of the more ‘winnable’ games on West Ham United’s fixture list.

Dropping yet more points, in addition to the 19 they have thrown away already this season, would have been, if not a fatal blow, then an almighty jab to the ribcage.

“We know how important this game was and we went all in for it, with the fans as well,” said Tomas Soucek, who opened the scoring and was on the pitch when Callum Wilson popped up in stoppage-time.

“Obviously, we were so happy that we scored first, and then it was a little bit tough for us with the 1-1.

“But we went for it again and the fans kept supporting us. That’s why we scored the second. The stadium exploded, and that’s what we need in this moment.

“My goal was nice to feel, but we knew there were still 30 or 40 minutes to the end. But that Callum goal, we knew then that we were winning. We were a little bit disappointed [after the equaliser], but we scored straight away.”

Nuno acknowledges the ‘headache’ Wilson’s presence provides. The veteran’s six Premier League goals have come from just ten starts, so understandably there has been some clamour for a larger role despite his advancing years.

“The noise, the atmosphere, and the emotion were very high. I’m so happy for Callum, for the fans, and for the team because the effort was the same as last week,” adds Soucek.

“We just keep enjoying our football and our results. We know everything is in our hands and that is so important. We just want to keep it this way until the end.

“[Callum] is an important player; he shows it in every session. Today was another two points he saved us. I give him big respect for what he is doing for this club.”

Bowen assisted both goals; a wicked corner for Soucek and a bullish back-post header for Wilson.

“It was a big game, a tough game, [on] a boiling hot day. To hold the lead, drop points, and then come back to win… incredible,” the captain beamed.

“I think most people in the stadium didn’t see that winner coming, but that’s what Callum does. He sniffs out a chance from nothing. He’s a credit to himself and has proven what he can do in the Premier League.

“For the winner, I was trying to get in at the back post, but I was probably too wide to head it at goal. I just tried to head it back across because you never know who is going to be there. It was like slow motion when the ball fell to [Callum].

“When it went in, it was pure relief.”
