Opta supercomputer makes new relegation prediction after West Ham draw with Crystal Palace

West Ham United’s 0-0 draw with Crystal Palace has opened the door for Tottenham in the battle against Premier League relegation.

Monday night’s game at Selhurst Park always looked like a tricky one on paper and so it proved as West Ham were held to a 0-0 draw with Palace.

Two points dropped or one point gained? 🤔

It was by no means a terrible performance or result of course, but Spurs now sit just two points behind the Hammers in the Premier League table.

Given Spurs play Wolves next and West Ham face a difficult game against Everton, the momentum could swing soon back in Tottenham’s favour.

Here’s what the famed Opta supercomputer makes of it all.

West Ham given a 38.03% chance of relegation

Their analytics give West Ham a 38.03% chance of getting relegated to the Championship for the first time in well over a decade.

Closest rivals Spurs, meanwhile, have a 57.17% chance of the drop.

The debate is whether one would rather points on the board or momentum at this stage of the season. Clearly, Spurs are in crisis – but they did show relative signs of improvement on Saturday.

While not to be too negative, there is a reasonable chance that Spurs overtake West Ham in the Premier League table on Saturday afternoon.

It’s difficult to know exactly what to make of it all. It felt like Monday’s game was a huge chance to make significant progress and while things could be worse, the door remains ajar.

A failure to win allows Leeds and Nottingham Forest the chance to pull away, too.

West Ham will no doubt fancy their chances but the fact that Spurs are within touching distance is a slight concern.

This felt like a missed opportunity for the Hammers, even if things could have been worse. Clarity remains hard to come by.
