Alan Shearer predicts when Eddie Howe will actually come under pressure at Newcastle United
Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer has set the record straight on whether Eddie Howe is really under pressure at St James’ Park.
The Newcastle United manager has faced speculation over his job in recent weeks, with the Magpies dropping down to 14th in the Premier League. That is simply not good enough, with some outsiders and fans on social media questioning Eddie Howe’s position.
However, Eddie Howe’s job at Newcastle United is not under pressure. He has the full backing of PIF, who appreciate just how important he is to their project.
He also has the luxury of his previous accomplishments on Tyneside, having won the Carabao Cup and guided the club to the Champions League twice.
Howe has so much credit in the bank, and that is why Alan Shearer has no concerns over his future at Newcastle United.
Will Eddie Howe still be Newcastle United manager at the start of the 2026/27 season?
Eddie Howe has Alan Shearer’s complete backing at Newcastle United
Speaking on the latest episode of the Rest Is Football podcast alongside Gary Lineker, Shearer was asked at what point does Howe become under pressure if Newcastle’s Premier League form does not improve.
“We know the rules of football, but surely he’s got so much in the bank,” he said.
“What he’s done for Newcastle when others couldn’t do it. When you mention some of the brilliant managers that Newcastle had, then no, not for me, not for a long time.

“I think the board will not panic. They will look at what he’s done in the past and they will look at their Champions League form. They will look at the fact they’re already in the quarter-finals of the Carabao again.
“Yeah, the league has been, particularly away from home, disappointing. And my guess is you might see one or two changes, whether that’s a change of system, whether that’s a change of one or two personnel this weekend, because you can’t keep on going and doing the same thing. And he’s not that daft to do that.
“But no, not for a long time for me, Eddie, because of what he’s achieved at Newcastle.”
Gary Lineker in agreement as Alan Shearer highlights two Newcastle United problems
Shearer does not want to make excuses for Howe and his side’s form, but the Newcastle United legend has highlighted a couple of factors that have certainly hindered the Magpies this season.
“It’s not an excuse, but you have to look at the fact of what happened to Newcastle in the summer,” he added.
“What we’ve always seen with Eddie is his team has always had great energy. Now, that’s going to be slightly changed because of personnel they had to bring in for the reasons we know. The Isak situation. Wissa hasn’t been able to play yet as well.
“For all those reasons, that’s why Eddie Howe should and will be given time at Newcastle to get their league form right. There’s no doubt in my mind that he’s the manager.”
Gary Lineker responded: “I think any talk of that is ridiculously premature. Ridiculously premature.”
Mehrdad Ghodoussi once claimed PIF wanted Eddie Howe to be Newcastle United’s Sir Alex Ferguson.
I would love Eddie to be the next Alex Ferguson
The Yoane Wissa injury situation is still not going away. The hope was he could make his debut against Everton, but there are now suggestions he will be out of action until December.
But Howe has a plan to fix Newcastle’s problems, and that will be put in place against Manchester City on Saturday. It is a tough return to action, especially given Newcastle’s terrible record against Man City.
However, we have seen this Toon side rise to the occasion against the top teams, and Howe will have no doubt that his side are capable of getting a positive result at St James’ Park on Saturday evening.
If they do, it could be the moment that sparks the Magpies’ Premier League revival.
