For as incredibly talented as their roster is, it has been surprising to watch the way the Los Angeles Dodgers have neglected the shortstop position.

Last spring, the Dodgers shocked the world by announcing Mookie Betts, the six-time Gold Glove right fielder, would be their starting shortstop to open the season.

Betts did a passable job at shortstop, an impressive achievement in itself, but wound up moving back to right field after returning from a prolonged injury absence. In 2025, though, the Dodgers are set to give Betts another crack in the middle of the diamond.

What if the plan falls through, though? Should the Dodgers just move Tommy Edman back to short, which produced mixed results after the trade deadline? Give Gavin Lux one last shot at the position? Maybe there’s a more reliable option out there.

Carlos Correa of the Minnesota Twins has heard his name a lot in trade discussions this week, which isn’t shocking, given that his current team has been trying to slash payroll in the midst of a failed television deal and an ownership change.

Correa is a Platinum Glove shortstop, had a .905 OPS last season (86 games), and has three All-Star appearances to his name. Entering his age-30 season, there’s lots of elite baseball left in his career assuming he can avoid injury scares like the plantar fasciitis that plagued him this year.

How could the Dodgers get Correa? Here’s one potential trade package that would ship the superstar shortstop to Chavez Ravine.

    Dodgers get: SS Carlos Correa

Twins get: SS Alex Freeland (Dodgers No. 3 prospect), LHP Justin Wrobleski (No. 6), OF James Outman

In this deal, the Dodgers would assume the entirety of the four years, $133 million remaining on Correa’s deal, plus the four vesting options that amount to $75 million over the following four seasons. It’s a big chunk of money, but it’s a sum the Dodgers can absorb thanks to all the deferred money they have on other contracts.

Minnesota, in turn, would get a potential replacement for Correa on the cheap, a mid-rotation starter in Wrobleski, and a former Rookie of the Year finalist in Outman looking for a rebound season. All three combined would cost less than 10 percent of Correa’s 2025 salary.

This isn’t a move the Dodgers have to make right away. Frankly, there’s no reason for the Twins to trade Correa now, either. But if Betts proves incapable of handling shortstop, LA should ratchet up the pressure on Minnesota to make this deal by the trade deadline.
