Astros Linked To Projected $200 Million Emergency Alex Bregman Replacement

The Houston Astros are entering the offseason with the future of their franchise hanging in the balance. Over the last few seasons, multiple Astros legends, including Carlos Correa and George Springer, have parted ways with the organization.

Now, third baseman Alex Bregman is a free agent. Houston is reportedly attempting to re-sign Bregman, but there’s a chance that he will land with a bigger market like the New York Yankees or New York Mets. Multiple teams could use such a talented and experienced infielder.

What would the Astros do if they lost him in free agency?

MLB Network’s Jon Morosi pitched an idea I hadn’t seen yet. He mentioned one $200 million free agent infielder that could come to Houston and replace Bregman if the Astros lose him: Willy Adames.

“Some might consider (Adames) in a different position. We could see the (Los Angeles) Dodgers, the (San Francisco) Giants, the Yankees, and the Astros if they don’t resign Bregman,” Morosi said. “I love that idea, by the way.”

This is a tough idea to break down. Adames is projected to land a bigger contract than Bregman because he’s younger and maybe even a bit more talented.

But would the Astros be willing to offer Adames $40 million more than Bregman after Bregman has given so much to the organization?

My gut tells me no. I believe Adames is the better fit for the organization, but it would be off-brand for Houston to offer Adames $200 million and Bregman $150 million. Only time will tell.
