The NFL trade deadline is less than a month away, and the Dallas Cowboys could be well-positioned to make a move.

Dallas is once again in solid position to make the postseason in a competitive NFC, and there are certainly moves they could make to improve their roster for a potential Super Bowl push. But what if there is also a trade that could bring back draft capital without losing an impact player?

The Cowboys have three quarterbacks on their roster, and their third-stringer was once a top draft prospect. If a quarterback-needy team thinks they could turn that backup into a starter, Dallas could be in position to gain an extra draft pickup

Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa has been out since Week 2 with a concussion, which has become a lingering threat to his career at this point. Cody Benjamin of CBS Sports proposed that the Cowboys could send quarterback Trey Lance to the Dolphins, presumably in exchange for a late-round 2025 draft choice.

“Tua Tagovailoa may return, but it feels irresponsible to trust he’ll stay upright and/or safe,” Benjamin said. “Coach Mike McDaniel was with the San Francisco 49ers when the dynamic but unpolished Lance was drafted high.”

Lance, 24, has played just four games in the NFL and none since 2022. The former number-three pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, Lance was one of the most unseasoned college prospects ever to be drafted high, and he still hasn’t had an extended look as a starting quarterback.

Perhaps Miami still wouldn’t be the place for Lance to get his shot, but the odds would be much higher of it happening there than in Dallas. If the Cowboys can recoup some draft capital in exchange for their third-stringer, that’s a trade worth making every time.
