Djeidi Gassama becomes first player in Rangers history to achieve feat as new announcement made

Djeidi Gassama moved to Rangers in the summer and is yet to establish himself as a first-team regular.

Gers paid Sheffield Wednesday £2.2m for the Mauritanian, who has also represented France at the youth level.

The winger has struggled in the final third, scoring just twice in 31 league games for the Ibrox outfit.

Djeidi Gassama becomes first Rangers player to represent Mauritania

Mauritania announced their squad for the international break friendlies and included Gassama in it.

By doing so, they ensured that he became the first-ever player in Rangers history to represent the African nation.

While he has represented France at the Under-20s level, he is eligible to play for Mauritania as he was born there.

He pledged his allegiance to them in early March and was called up by Aritz Lopez Garai over the last few days.

The 22-year-old could now be in line to make his international debut in a high-profile friendly against Argentina on 27 March.

What does the future hold for Gassama?

Despite only joining in the summer, Gassama was subject to transfer interest in January.

AS Monaco were considering signing the 22-year-old and were willing to pay a decent sum to the Gers in order to secure his services.

However, Danny Rohl was promised that his first-team squad would be kept intact while also being given four new players to strengthen his eleven.

Rangers expect offers over £10m for Gassama in the summer, so an exit cannot be ruled out at the end of the season.

Club Brugge and Villarreal were also keen on signing the soon-to-be Mauritana international in January, and could return to the table.

The feeling is that if Rangers get a decent sum of money for the winger, they may be compelled to cash in on him.

He does not make Rohl’s strongest eleven, and there are likely to be a couple of more wide attackers that the club will be looking to sign.

This would put Gassama further down in the pecking order, and the Gers hierarchy would be foolish to turn down a significant profit after an underwhelming season.
