Exclusive: West Ham issue promising new update on Summerville after claims from journalists

West Ham have issued a promising new update on Crysencio Summerville after claims from journalists about the length of time he will be sidelined by injury.

The Hammers were hit by a huge blow when Crysencio Summerville picked up an injury in the FA Cup fifth round win over Brentford on Monday night.

It was feared the flying Dutchman may have suffered a recurrence of the hamstring problem which required an operation and kept him out for most of last year.

Now West Ham have issued a promising new update on Summerville after claims from several journalists.

If Summerville is out, who do YOU want to see start on the left?

A senior West Ham spokesman told Hammers News Summerville will almost certainly miss upcoming games against Manchester City and Aston Villa and will therefore not be ready to return until after the two-week international break.

Barring any setbacks, the Hammers expect Summerville to return for the FA Cup quarter-final against his former side Leeds on the weekend of April 4-5. But the Irons may proceed with caution and wait until the crucial Wolves game on April 11th.

Since then Guardian journalist Jacob Steinberg and Athletic reporter Roshane Thomas have both claimed Summerville might only miss the Man City game this weekend and be back for Villa.

Nuno Espirito Santo confirmed the 24-year-old is out of the match against Man City and admitted the club will have to take his recovery ‘day-by-day’.

Nuno told the press: “It is a calf issue. We will assess him day-by-day and see how he goes, keep improving. We’re going to miss him, as he’s been an important player for us, but he will miss this game for sure.”

After Hammers News broke the news that Summerville would be out until after the international break, Steinberg doubled down but gave hope of a potential comeback against Villa.

“The likeliest scenario is Summerville returns after international break – presumably the Leeds cup game – but there’s a very slim chance he recovers in time for Villa next weekend,” he said.

“A blow for him as he was going to be in the Netherlands squad.”

The Athletic’s West Ham reporter Thomas went one further, revealing Summerville himself is hopeful of being back fit when the Hammers head to Villa Park in just over a week.

West Ham give hope of earlier Summerville return

Hammers News put those more optimistic claims to the top spokesman at West Ham.

While the update could be left open to interpretation, it was short and potentially very sweet.

Because when asked directly if Summerville will miss City and Villa, the response was less conclusive than the original revelation he would be out until after the international break.

It was put to the West Ham spokesman that there had been more positive claims about Summerville returning sooner.

“Who knows if he will miss both the Man City and Aston Villa matches or be back for Villa,” the West Ham spokesman told Hammers News.

That does at least reaffirm that Summerville should only miss two games as a worst case scenario.

And at the same time it does not rule out the prospect of the in-form winger taking his place in the side at Villa Park, a game where West Ham will be hopeful of a positive result given the patchy form of Unai Emery’s team.
