Newcastle United player ratings vs Barcelona as Lewis Hall delivers masterclass against Lamine Yamal

Newcastle United were dealt late heartbreak on Tuesday night after drawing 1-1 with Barcelona in the first leg of their Champions League round of 16 clash.

When Harvey Barnes finished well from a Jacob Murphy cross in the 86th minute, it looked as if it would give Newcastle United a slender advantage ahead of their trip to Spain next week.

Eddie Howe’s side denied Barca many chances and would have been well worth a victory but a late penalty from Lamine Yamal gave the La Liga champions the advantage heading into next week’s trip to Spain.

Here’s how Geordie Boot Boys rated the players on a massive night of Champions League action…

    Aaron Ramsdale – 7

Did not have a huge amount to do and he largely did that well.

    Kieran Trippier – 8

Used all of his experience to keep Raphinha largely quiet. Trippier has had better games in an attacking sense but he did his job defensively.

    Malick Thiaw – 8

Gutting to concede a late penalty but did little else wrong.

    Dan Burn – 8

Almost put through his own net in the first half but dealt with Robert Lewandowski very well.

    Lewis Hall – 9

Absolutely brilliant once again. Pocketed Yamal – who did nothing outside of his penalty – and looks like he belongs at this level. A stunning performance from Hall.

    Sandro Tonali – 7

Had much more control in the midfield than he did the last time these two teams played. Again, not a player who looked out of place.

    Joelinton – 7

Almost at his brilliant best. A powerful force in midfield and a threat driving forward.

    Jacob Ramsey – 7

Starting to come good now. Ramsey is looking like a real player now, and it is increasingly easy to see why Howe wanted to sign him.

    Another strong performance.

    Anthony Elanga – 6

Some notable mistakes with his end product but did also produce some good moments. Elanga may never be the finished product, however, and that is difficult to accept given how much Newcastle paid for him.

    William Osula – 5

Gave it his all and certainly posed Barca problems with his pace but never really convinced.

    Harvey Barnes – 7

One of the more dangerous players on the night and desperately unlucky to hit the post late on. Another big goal in the Champions League and it’s a shame it wasn’t the winner.

    Subs:

    Tino Livramento – 6

    Anthony Gordon – 6

    Jacob Murphy – 6
