Simon Jordan shares what he saw in the Rangers and Celtic boardrooms after controversial developments

Simon Jordan has chimed in after horrific scenes unfolded following the Rangers and Celtic Scottish Cup final clash.

Celtic beat Rangers on penalties, but very few people are discussing the result in the aftermath of the game.

The entire controversy surrounds both sets of fans invading the Ibrox pitch after the game, with scenes turning violent.

Simon Jordan not in favour of banning away fans at Old Firm games

Simon Jordan was asked by Jim White if the incidents on Sunday would mean a ban on away fans at Old Firm derbies, but he disagreed with that assertion.

Instead, Jordan called for the police to be doing a better job and for the clubs to react to the horrific developments.

There have already been nine arrests and that number is only expected to increase, as there were dozens of perpetrators on both sides.

A police officer was hit on the head with a bottle, while a 10-year-old was hit by a coin.

Jordan, who claims to have been in both clubs’ boardrooms, believes that he wasn’t impressed with the directors on either side.

    MORE RANGERS STORIES

He also wants there to be more arrests and for action to be taken against the perpetrators and not the away fans who did not do anything.

Speaking on talkSPORT, the former Crystal Palace owner said: “That (banning away fans) can’t be the utopia. You can’t let the minority affect the majority because there are factions within these fanbases that think they can behave as they want.

“I would imagine Rangers would have given undertakings to the police to govern the game in a certain way and to steward it in a certain way. You have to ask the question about policing and how much policing was involved. We are not back in the 80s and I’m not suggesting that it should be a precursor to giving it as an excuse, but we have to qualify that.

“It is an underbelly of society that people think they can do what they want, and they don’t respect authority.

“I’ve been in their boardroom and I was not particularly impressed by both sets of Rangers and Celtic directors. They were silly buggers in that situation, but they’re also not weak people.

“So there must be a reason why they allow certain factions inside football stadiums. You can’t legislate for morons behaving in a certain way. We’ve proven the case that we need to eliminate the morons from the equations and then hopefully, the rest of it will take care of itself.

“Why aren’t the police nicking people on the pitch? Why aren’t they being arrested?”

Have Rangers and Celtic responded to the incidents?

Neither Rangers nor Celtic issued official statements following the pitch invasions, but the managers were asked about it post full-time.

Martin O’Neill was unwilling to call out the Hoops fans and stated that these things happen in the aftermath of cup games, as there is euphoria surrounding wins.

He credited the security for trying to make the best out of what was a difficult situation to handle.

The Celtic manager said: ” As we were making our way back, I think there was some sort of fracas; somebody tried to get on the field.

“And, as you say, maybe it does taint proceedings, but I think there’s an element of self-protection in that one. So, if that’s the case, please, I’m making judgments here on things that I only half saw.

“The security men, in fairness to them, were wanting to get people off. But there is a natural euphoria about winning a game and about fans joining in. If this has gone too far, that would be disappointing.”

Danny Rohl, on the other hand, stated that he did not see what exactly went down.

While he did say that it is not something that anyone likes to see, he claimed that he was not on the pitch when it all happened.

He said: “I was not on the pitch in this moment. I didn’t see it until now.

“Nobody likes to see this. It was a great atmosphere in 120 minutes. All the other things should not be in the stadium or around football.”
