James Tavernier Rangers News: Updated Stance On Accepting Offer Revealed

James Tavernier is keen to extend his stay at Rangers and hopes to put pen to paper on a new contract if the club are willing to make an offer.

The 34-year-old hopes to finish his career at Ibrox, despite seeing his playing time reduced in recent weeks under Danny Rohl’s management.

His penalty got Rangers off to the worst possible start in their Scottish Cup quarter-final shootout defeat against Celtic, but that has done little to dent his legacy.

Former Man United chief scout Mick Brown told Football Insider that Tavernier is still very highly thought of both on and off the pitch in Glasgow.

The right-back is keen to sign a new deal if one is offered, but ahead of what is expected to be a busy transfer window for Rangers, his future is not certain.

James Tavernier keen to extend Rangers contract

Football Insider revealed last month that Tavernier’s future at Rangers is still uncertain, with contract talks delayed amid doubts over his age.

However, the right-back is keen to extend his stay at Ibrox given his experience and leadership qualities, while he is reluctant to move on at this stage of his career.

“James Tavernier will want to stay at Rangers if he has the choice,” Brown told Football Insider.

“At 34 years old, I don’t think he’s considering moving elsewhere because it takes time to settle in and adapt to a new club, new surroundings.

“He knows Rangers like the back of his hand, he’s the club captain and he’s a very influential voice there, I don’t see why he’d throw that away at this stage.

“Obviously it will depend on whether Rangers are going to offer him a new deal, but I think he’ll want to sign it if they do because he is happy there.

“He’s coming towards the end of his career and it would make sense for that to be at Rangers, even if he drops out of the side, he still has a role to play.”

When will Rangers open talks with Tavernier?

Despite Tavernier being keen to extend his stay at Ibrox, no talks have taken place over the offer of a new contract, and he is set to leave for free as things stand.

Rangers remain locked in a title race against Celtic and Hearts, although they remain six points behind the league leaders, and their efforts are focused on the pitch.

Football Insider revealed last month that Rangers are not planning talks with Tavernier until the end of the season when they will have a clear picture of their ambitions.

There are some concerns at Ibrox over Tavernier’s age, but his quality is still undisputed and he remains a valuable member of the squad despite a drop in playing time.

They are, therefore, reluctant to see him leave for free although speculation about his future has been rife in recent years and they may opt to let him move on.
