Keith Hackett Exclusive: Scottish FA enquiry likely after ‘ugly scenes’ at Rangers vs Celtic

The Scottish FA are now likely to enquire into the full-time scenes in Rangers‘ penalty shootout loss to Celtic in the Scottish Cup Quarter-final on Sunday, says Keith Hackett.
Rangers hosted the Hoops in another Old Firm clash at Ibrox, as this time, Martin O’Neill got the better of Danny Rohl.
A stalemate over 120 minutes of football, which lacked any sort of quality in the final third, was eventually wrapped up by Tomas Cvancara’s winning penalty for the visitors.
But perhaps more importantly, the game saw the Broomloan Stand opened up and filled up by the 7,000 travelling Celtic supporters for the first time in eight years.
Rangers’ loss to Celtic was damaging, but Hackett’s suggestion may now worry both clubs over future Old Firm derbies after fighting for control of the stands and fan safety for years.
Keith Hackett says fans showed ‘unacceptable behaviour’ in Rangers vs Celtic
Supporters of both sets of clubs have been wanting a resolution to recent fan controls at both Ibrox and Celtic Park.
Major steps have been taken in recent times to get the Old Firm derby back to what it used to be, but there is a clear line that cannot be crossed.
- An investigation may now be launched into stadium security following a potential review of footage
- Celtic and Rangers fans may receive disciplinary and criminal charges
Speaking exclusively to Ibrox News, former PGMOL chief, Hackett, suggested the next steps the Scottish FA could take following the scenes at full-time, where both sets of fans entered the field of play.
Hackett said: “After a pulsating nil-nil after extra time, the game went into a penalty shoot-out with Celtic the winners. Thanks to the lines of security and police who formed across the pitch at the conclusion of the game managed to calm things down by preventing fans from coming to blows.
“Ugly scenes at the end. Unacceptable behaviour, which will no doubt be the subject of a Scottish FA enquiry.”
There could be a chance that another fan ban is given out, reversing the compromise Rangers and Celtic previously reached.
What will be Rangers’ next steps?
Ibrox was up in arms after the final whistle, and rightly so. Many Gers supporters will have been expecting victory, given how close they were to three points last time out in the league against the Hoops.
However, Rohl’s biggest mistake may have been sticking with the same formation which O’Neill’s side had already shown they had figured out in the 2-2 draw last weekend.
Time will tell, but Rangers and Celtic may now both release club statements regarding the incidents before any formal investigation is launched into the matter.
No doubt it’s an incident that will be concluded, and it may not be a nice outcome at that.
