Cameron Ashia Rangers Transfer News: New Twist as Ibrox Giants Race Championship Clubs To Deal

Cameron Ashia is attracting interest from a number of English Championship clubs who have now joined Rangers and Celtic in the race for his signature.

The 20-year-old will be available as a free agent in the summer as things stand, with his contract at Huddersfield set to expire at the end of the season.

As I revealed on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Transfer Insider podcast, a number of clubs have been placed on alert over his potential availability.

Ashia has impressed for Huddersfield this season and is seen as a bright prospect for the future, but has not received the game time he has been looking for.

Rangers believe they would be able to tempt the attacking midfielder to make the move up to Scotland and could offer him a pre-contract deal to beat rivals to his signature.

Championship clubs join Rangers in Cameron Ashia race

Football Insider revealed on 27 February that Rangers have set their sights on Ashia and believe they could convince him to choose them ahead of their rivals.

Celtic could also offer him the opportunity to move up to Scotland, but offers from the Championship will prove tempting for the London-born attacking midfielder.

While still one for the future, Ashia is highly regarded by a number of clubs and will have no shortage of options if he chooses to depart Huddersfield.

Speaking on the Transfer Insider podcast, I explained: “He’s a player that I think a lot of clubs will probably be looking at due to his contract situation.

“He’s out of contract at Huddersfield in the summer, so he could be lured away for minimal compensation if he was to make that move up to Scotland.

“Obviously there is a real potential there with Cameron Ashia. If they can sign a top young player who’s 19 right now for free in the summer, it’ll be real smart piece of business by Rangers.

“I think there’ll be a lot of English clubs also looking at him as well, so that might be tempting for him to stay in England and move up the divisions.

“I think there’s quite a few in the Championship who’ll be looking at Ashia if Huddersfield do not manage to tie him down to a new contract.”

Rangers dealt blow in pursuit of Jesse Lingard

Ashia is not the only player Rangers have set their sights on in recent weeks as they plan to stay alert to any potential market opportunities.

Reports suggested the Ibrox club had been interested in a move for former Man United star Jesse Lingard last month, who is available as a free agent.

However, Football Insider revealed on 27 February that Lingard is not interested in Rangers and has ruled out a return to Europe in favour of a move elsewhere.

The 33-year-old former England international is a free agent having cancelled his contract at South Korean club FC Seoul, where he spent almost two years.

Following his time in South Korea, the midfielder is keen to broaden his horizons and prefers a move to Brazil over any potential return to Europe.
