Exclusive: Rangers make new decision on sensational Todd Cantwell return

Todd Cantwell has been linked with a sensational return to Rangers in recent weeks but is considered extremely unlikely to make the move.

Cantwell left Ibrox under a cloud in 2024, following a bust-up with then-manager Philippe Clement and having submitted multiple transfer requests.

The 27-year-old never managed to endear himself to the supporters in Glasgow, who have retained those negative feelings, and it is unlikely he would be welcomed back.

As I revealed on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Transfer Insider podcast, Rangers do not view Cantwell as a potential transfer target ahead of the summer.

With one year remaining on his contract at Blackburn Rovers, there is a growing feeling he could move on, but a return to Glasgow is seen as almost impossible.

Cantwell was far from a fans’ favourite during his time at Ibrox, where he featured 64 times, scored 14 goals and provided 12 assists.

Since moving back to England with Blackburn, he has continued to impress in the Championship, but their ongoing relegation battle could see him jump ship.

Despite the question marks over his future, any talk of a return to Ibrox has been dismissed, with neither party likely to welcome the move.

Speaking on the Transfer Insider podcast, I explained: “Yeah, again, very strange link this one.

“I don’t see it for the life of me that Rangers would consider a move to bring Cantwell back.

“When he did leave the club to join Blackburn 20 months ago, it was under a bit of a cloud.

“A lot of the fans weren’t happy with him. He had a fallout with the then manager, Philippe Clement, had submitted two transfer requests during his time at Ibrox as well.

“That didn’t go down well with the supporters, so I don’t think Rangers will be entertaining the move to bring Todd Cantwell back to Ibrox.

“I think Rangers have moved on from Todd Cantwell and I don’t think they would even entertain a move for the attacking midfielder.”

Bojan Miovski could push to leave Rangers

Another player who has struggled to click with Rangers fans since his arrival is Bojan Miovski, despite the initial high hopes of his arrival.

The striker was brought in to add goals to their front line, while his Scottish Premiership experience with Aberdeen was expected to be a boost to his chances of success.

However, Football Insider revealed on 16 February that Miovski could now push to leave Rangers if he remains on the fringes of the squad under Rohl.

The 26-year-old striker is currently unhappy with the role he is playing under Rohl, who has preferred to use Ryan Naderi and Youssef Chermiti from the start.

In 21 appearances so far this season, he has scored just four goals and provided one assist, as he struggles to hit the heights expected upon his arrival.
