What Stig Inge Bjornebye has shown the 49ers will his character have kick-started internal talks at Rangers

What Stig Inge Bjornebye has shown the 49ers will have kick-started internal talks at Rangers

Stig Inge Bjornebye, Paraag Marathe and Andrew Cavenagh all stood in front of the Ibrox Stadium for Rangers.

Rangers had an exciting summer transfer window led by Stig Inge Bjornebye, but now, the results are in.

There was a lot of talk about the Ibrox movement in the past couple of weeks, with many names making Gers fans lose their minds over possibilities.

But that was a similar case in the summer, with dealings conducted by the disgraced Kevin Thelwell.

It was a big job for Bjornebye to step up into, and now that the new signings have seemingly bedded in under Danny Rohl, the 49ers may have had a change of mind.

Stig Inge Bjornebye pulled off winter window masterclass

The 49ers were most likely planning on using Bjornebye as a stopgap until the summer, when they could appoint a permanent and long-term replacement for Thelwell.

But Bjornebye looks to have pulled off a masterclass for Rangers, with the Bears now closing in on top spot in the Scottish Premiership.

    • Bjornebye is on an initial six-month deal with the Bears
    • His role is an advisory one, and he is not a temporary sporting director

Bjornebye was reporting directly to Cavenagh throughout the winter window, offering his advice to the Rangers board on who he thinks they should sign.

The board clearly showed trust in the transfer guru, splashing out over £12million on permanent arrivals, and they have likely started to speak about his permanent appointment.

So far, every single one looks like a hit, and they are contributing to a stride for the Scottish Premiership title.

What Bjornebye’s permanent appointment hinges on

As good an impression as Bjornebye has made, it doesn’t necessarily mean he will be given the job on a permanent basis.

It was made clear that it was just a temporary role, but the results from signing out on the pitch could prove to be a massive turning point in the Bears’ trajectory, which surely demands consideration.

However, even if the likes of Ryan Naderi, Andreas Skov Olsen and Tochi Chukwuani keep performing for Rohl, Bjornebye’s future could hinge on silverware.

Rangers still have a chance of winning the Scottish Cup, and if they do, that could be enough for the 49ers to give Bjornebye the job.

But the league title is the aim, and it would seem very harsh not to see him stay at Ibrox beyond this season
