Darren Bent blown away by what he’s heard about James Tavernier – ‘That can’t be right’

James Tavernier has been a constant presence for Rangers since joining the club in 2015.

Tavernier is out of contract at Rangers in the summer, and there has been no progress on a new deal at the moment.

Panathinaikos are believed to want the Rangers ace on a free transfer, which could see him reunite with Cyriel Dessers.

He has been a key figure for the Ibrox side in recent years, but his influence is starting to wain, leaving Danny Rohl with a dilemma.

What could Bent not believe about Rangers star Tavernier?

Tavernier scored a hat-trick in the 8-0 Scottish Cup win over Queen’s Park, taking his total Gers tally to 143 goals.

    MORE RANGERS STORIES

Darren Bent could not believe it when he heard about the Light Blues star’s level of goal contributions, considering the position that he plays in.

Speaking on talkSPORT on 10 February (18:40 pm), he said: “I tell you, who for a full-back his numbers, I think I heard it over the weekend, I think he has got like 145 career goals.

“James Tavernier from Rangers, he plays right-back.”

Andy Goldstein replied: “He is obviously taking free-kicks and penalties, it is an insane number.”

Bent continued: “He has got 145 career goals, I heard it on the radio, and I was like that can’t be right.”

Tavernier’s numbers are better than Bent has heard

Tavernier’s figures are even better than Bent suggested, he got them completely wrong, which is not a surprise.

The 34-year-old actually has 152 career goals with the majority of them coming for the Govan outfit.

He failed to mention his assist record, which is perhaps even more impressive, with 160 in total for the whole of his career.

For the Bears, he has notched 147 assists, for a total of 290 goal contributions since moving to Scottish football.

StatsRangersCareerTavernier’s record for Rangers and in totalJust this season, he has 13 goals and five assists in 41 matches, showing that he can still make an impact when needed.

Whether he extends his time in G51 or moves on elsewhere, his numbers are truly remarkable, and it is nice to see him getting some credit in the mainsteam British media for once.

One thing is for sure, he will go down as a legend in Glasgow, regardless of what happens with his contract situation at the end of the season, and if he moves on to a new club or not.

Rohl and Co face a tough decision on whether to keep him around or not, as his leadership and ability to come up with crucial moments, may well be more important than his defensive abilities.
