Newcastle United winger Jacob Murphy is facing a ‘period’ out on the sidelines with a ‘strange’ hamstring issue.

The 30-year-old has had multiple scans on his hamstring problem, which saw him rested in the FA Cup win over Bournemouth before forcing him off in the first half of the Carabao Cup defeat to Manchester City.

Despite the scan results all coming back clear in terms of no serious issue, head coach Eddie Howe ruled Murphy out of Newcastle’s upcoming matches.

    Jacob Murphy injury update

Providing an update on Murphy’s injury, Howe told The Gazette: “Jacob’s had another scan and again, nothing showing. So, it’s a strange one.

“But of course, you have to go on the symptoms and how the player feels, which we’ll always have regularcommunication with all of our players.

“So, I’m sure that’ll mean probably a period where Jacob has to come out. For how long, I don’t know at this moment in time. But we’re very thankful that it’s not a serious problem and hopefully, one we can overcome very quickly.”

It gives Howe decisions to make on the right wing for Newcastle’s upcoming fixtures with Anthony Elanga now back available following a knee injury. Harvey Barnes has also been used on the right despite preferring to play on the left.

    William Osula injury update

Another potential option on the right wing for The Magpies historically has been William Osula, though the 22-year-old has been rarely used in the role and is currently out injured.

Similar to Murphy, Osula also had scans on an ankle injury that came back clear, but has been out of action for 11 weeks as things stand.

The forward, who has been linked with a move away to Newcastle, is said to be closing in on a return to action.

“With Will, Will’s situation was different,” Howe added. “But yes, he’s had a length of time out.

“He’s had to start from zero where he had a period of rest and now we’re building him back up. But he’s very close to hopefully returning to training and then being ready to play.”
