Newcastle United player ratings as three stars slump to 3/10 in Wolves shocker

The Magpies could not see off a team that will be playing in the Championship next season

Newcastle United lacked impact in the final third and failed to see off bottom of the table Wolves.

    ‌

This was a game that the Magpies struggled in for long periods but didn’t deserve to win it. An inept first half from both sides resulted in no shots on target although Newcastle did strike the post as Malick Thiaw connected with a Kieran Trippier corner. Yerson Mosquera prodded one at Nick Pope before half-time while Hugo Bueno fired wide with the bottom club digging deep.

    ‌

Newcastle made it past the hour mark without managing a shot on target with Jose Sa still untested going into the latter stages. Bruno and Joelinton would manage efforts on target, but Newcastle lacked any offensive quality on the day and were held by the relegation haunted side.

    ‌

Here’s how United fared at Molineux:

    Nick Pope 7

Routine saves and a clean sheet. Done his bit.

    Kieran Trippier 7

Tried to waft the dying embers of a damp display in the rain. Unlucky from a free-kick. Played through head wound.

    ‌

    Malick Thiaw 7

Steady enough and unlucky to see ffort hit the post.

    Sven Botman 6

Looked a bit leggy and caught out by pace of Wolves attack. Picked up a booking in an unconvincing display.

    Lewis Hall 7

Tried to keep up the momentum for Newcastle. Carried a threat going forward.

    ‌

    Joelinton 7

Battled hard and had a couple of glimpses of goal. Pick of a midfield that were second best at times.

    Sandro Tonali 5

Not at it. Performance was always unravelling with yellow card the cue for a second half hooking. Looked frustrated.

    Bruno Guimaraes 6

Managed a shot on target late on but way off

    ‌

    Anthony Gordon 6

Lifted the crowd early on when on the ball. Ultimately could only deliver one accurate cross. His number came up on 67 minutes.

    Harvey Barnes 5

Was better when he switched to the left but by that time it was too late. Lacked threat.

    Nick Woltemade 3

Looked devoid of confidence. Struggled to attack crosses with power. Left the pitch after 13 touches. Now at the stage where he needs to make something happen.

    ‌

    Subs

Lewis Miley 7 (for Tonali 67)

    Brought some composure.

    ‌

Yoane Wissa 3 (for Woltemade 67)

    No impact.

Anthony Elanga 3 (for Gordon 67)
