Merlin Rohl transfer in limbo already after latest Everton injury developments

Everton have concerns over a future permanent deal for Merlin Rohl.

Rohl signed for Everton on deadline day as the Toffees made a final swoop to add to their squad at the Hill Dickinson Stadium.

The German joined on loan alongside fellow loanee Jack Grealish after his move from Manchester City, but the latter has tasted much more success.

Rohl has struggled with injuries at Everton and has featured for just 91 minutes since his loan move from Freiburg was confirmed.

A permanent move looms for Rohl in the summer, but David Moyes and Co. may look to call quits on that deal in the coming weeks and months.

Everton could cancel permanent deal for Merlin Rohl

Everton could pay upwards of £21million for Rohl in the summer if they are to go ahead with their obligation to buy the midfielder.

The Toffees agreed on this element of a loan deal to push a deal for the 23-year-old on deadline day, but could live to regret that.

Rohl has seriously struggled with fitness on Merseyside and currently looks set to be out for many weeks due to injury.

A lack of gametime for the Blues has raised concerns over a permanent switch, something which former Everton scout Bryan King is wary of.

Speaking exclusively to Goodison News, King said: “I think they’ve got to do what they originally set out to.

“These things happen to players, and invariably, when you pick up a nasty injury, you can often pick up another one later down the line. Unfortunately for Rohl and Everton, this is what’s occurred.

“The first thing that Everton have got to do is get him fit and then assess him in the second half of the season, and then make a decision.

“You’re not going to go and buy a player who has been injured for six months if you can help it.

“They have to see him have a proper run in the team, and then it’s up to him to fulfil the quality that Everton saw in him.

“Everton thought he could be a good player for the future, but at the moment, it’s all in limbo because of the injury situation. It’s a tricky one, really.“

Rohl must prove Everton doubters wrong

There is a reason that the Toffees swooped in for Rohl over the summer.

The former Ingolstadt youngster had performed well across varying positions in the Bundesliga last season for SC Freiburg and looked to be an ideal Moyes player.

Chances have been few and far between for the German this season, even when fit, but that is largely due to a lack of impact when called upon.

If he doesn’t want his Premier League dream to be cut short early, he needs to prove himself when given the chance; otherwise, he risks his loan deal being cancelled entirely.
