Jack Grealish’s ‘regret’ over private video being leaked speaks volumes

Jack Grealish has been in sensational form for Everton this season after a difficult second campaign at Manchester City, and has quickly become something of a fan favourite

Jack Grealish has endeared himself to the Everton fans as a top operator since joining on loan from Manchester City.

    ‌

But the England international showed his heart has always been in the right place when he made a heartfelt apology to Miguel Almiron after making disparaging remarks about the former Newcastle United man.

    ‌

Grealish clinched the Premier League title in dramatic circumstances during his first season at the Etihad Stadium, back in 2022. Pep Guardiola’s side mounted an incredible comeback after going 2-0 down against Aston Villa on the final day of the season to triumph 3-2 and pip Liverpool to the title by just a single point for the second time in four seasons.

    ‌

While Grealish found it difficult to adapt to the Spaniard’s style of play, that didn’t prevent the England international from fully embracing the celebratory festivities.

During the club’s trophy parade, he was questioned about what sparked City’s remarkable comeback, to which he directed a savage dig at Almiron. When a phone was pointed at him, he said: “There were two secrets – one, Riyad (Mahrez), take him off the pitch, as soon as possible. He played like Almiron.”

Former Magpies midfielder Almiron endured a torrid time during the 2021/22 campaign, scoring only one goal in 32 appearances in all competitions.

    ‌

But it was several months later, during the 2022/23 season, that Grealish revealed his empathetic nature and voiced regret over his remarks, admitting the video was intended to remain private but was subsequently leaked.

In a chat with the Daily Mail, he clarified: “I haven’t actually been asked about that and let me just address it. I do some f*****g stupid stuff sometimes that I do regret. It was the day after the season finished and obviously I’d had a few drinks. Then I remember I was in Ibiza and it (the video) had obviously come out.”

While Grealish was apologising, Almiron was having the best season of his career on Tyneside, ending the season with 11 goals. He confessed in an interview that Grealish is a top player and he wished him well.

    ‌

The Everton star also noted in the interview that he had taken note of Almiron’s comments and showed utmost respect towards his fellow professional. “I swear, I’m actually buzzing at the way he’s reacted,” Grealish continued.

    ‌

“I messaged Matt Targett because I’m close with him from Villa, and I said to him, ‘Can you message him for me and say to him that I apologise’. I thought the video was private. But even in private, I shouldn’t have said it because he’s a fellow professional.”

Despite bagging seven trophies in a mere four years at City, Grealish’s form took a nosedive last season, where he netted just one league goal throughout the entire campaign.

However, since his loan move to Everton, the winger has found his mojo again and has become an instrumental player for David Moyes, with the Merseyside club currently sitting eighth in the table after seven matches.

He’s already notched up five goals and assists, three more than he managed in the whole of last season, and opened his account for the club with a last-gasp winner in their 2-1 victory over Crystal Palace last weekend.

Moyes was full of praise for Grealish after the match, stating: “Jack’s done great again; he had a couple of shots on target which were comfortable for the goalkeeper to save. I have been pushing him to get goals and assists – Johnny on the spot, that is the key.”
