Kevin Durant trade somehow just made Lakers look even more genius
The Houston Rockets just made a huge trade for Kevin Durant, and somehow, the package they sent out makes the Los Angeles Lakers’ blockbuster trade for Luka Doncic look even more insane. Obviously, the Lakers shocked the world when they traded for Doncic, but comparing the Doncic haul to the Davis haul, it looks even crazier in hindsight.
Durant, who will be 37 for all of next season, fetched the No. 10 pick in this year’s NBA Draft, and five future second-round picks for the Phoenix Suns. Meanwhile, Doncic, who is a consensus top-five player in basketball already at 26 years old, was only able to get the Dallas Mavericks one first-rounder.
That is ridiculous.
Comparing the Kevin Durant trade to Luka Doncic trade
In total, the Suns managed to get Jalen Green, Dillon Brooks, and the aforementioned draft capital in exchange for Durant. Meanwhile, the Lakers had to give up Anthony Davis and Max Christie in the deal, along with a future first-rounder.
Obviously, Davis is the best player involved in either of the trades (outside of perhaps Durant, depending on who you ask). But that’s not the point.
The point is that the Mavs threw away their future for a chance to win right away, and they did it for a guy who has historically struggled to stay on the court.
Green is an imperfect player. He’s not a great defender and has an issue with efficiency. But he’s only 23 years old. He still has a ton of room to grow. Plus, the Suns got a top-10 pick in this year’s draft that could give them a chance to draft the likes of Cedric Coward, Carter Bryant, or Derik Queen.
All the Lakers had to give up for a player who is currently better than Durant and will be for almost a decade was an aging star entering the backend of his prime, a youngster who hasn’t proved much in the NBA, and a future first-round pick.
And to make matters worse, the Suns had no leverage. Durant had already made it painfully clear that he wanted out of Phoenix, and he even gave a list of teams with whom he would sign a long-term deal.
The Mavs could have had all the leverage in the world. They could have shopped Doncic around, gotten a historic haul of first-rounders, and walked away feeling good. But they didn’t. Instead, the Lakers looked like bandits.
And now, seeing what the Suns managed to scrape together in a Durant deal (a package that was still probably subpar, considering the overall lack of first-round picks), the Lakers look even more genius.
