Red Sox trade pitcher recently designated for assignment
BOSTON — Days after they designated him for assignment, the Red Sox Saturday dealt righthanded pitcher Brian Van Belle to the Cincinnati Reds for cash considerations.
He had appeared in 12 games — eight of them starts — for the WooSox this season, posting a 2.29 ERA and a WHIP of 1.06 with 41 strikeouts in 51 innings of work.
Van Belle was signed by the Red Sox as an undrafted free agent out of the University of Miami in 2020, he was 37-19 with a 4.41 ERA over the course of 115 minor league appearances. He’s a native of Fort Lauderdale.
Though not part of the team’s 40-man roster at the time, Van Belle got into some major league spring training games back in March.
