Golden State Warriors Could Add NBA Champion in Free Agency to Build Around Stephen Curry

The 2024-25 season hasn’t been going the way fans of the Golden State Warriors would’ve hoped.

The Warriors opted to break up the famous duo of Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson and traded Thompson to the Dallas Mavericks in July.

That decision hasn’t led to success, as Golden State is 28-27 and the No. 10 seed in the Western Conference.

Meanwhile, Curry’s shooting numbers are down, and Jimmy Butler is still adjusting.

    How can the Warriors improve?

They still don’t get much out of their center position. While Trayce Jackson-Davis and Quinten Post are serviceable, a serious upgrade would have to be made to see them contend.

Because of this, Dean Simon of The Sporting News believes they could look to free agency to get better production and perhaps a better fit at the position.

He believes they could add veteran big man Al Horford and thinks he would be a better fit.

“Golden State’s hypothetical acquisition of Horford heading into what would be his 19th NBA season could plausibly still be a great decision, as the two-man game between he and Curry would have the potential to be a dangerous combination due to Horford’s ability to stretch the floor,” wrote Simon.

Considering his age, Horford would likely have to be part of a rotation at the position rather than a minutes eater.

Simon thinks Horford would also be able to help them out on the defensive end of the floor, too.

“On defense, he’d also fit right in as a solid rim-protector next to two all-time great defensive players like Butler and Green,” wrote Simon. “As an added bonus, Horford’s NBA Finals D.N.A. would give the Warriors yet another reliable talent with endless postseason experience.

Unfortunately, it’s entirely possible the Warriors don’t even get that far, as Horford, who would be 39 and entering his 19th season, could retire at the end of the season.
