Yankees Broadcaster Fires Ridiculous Insult at Dodgers’ Shohei Ohtani
Most baseball fans would likely agree Los Angeles Dodgers two-way phenom Shohei Ohtani is the sport’s top player, with New York Yankees outfielder Aaron Judge right behind him.
Yankees play-by-play announcer Michael Kay feels differently.
Kay recently blasted MLB Network’s Top 100 Players Right Now list. Ohtani deservedly topped the list after the first 50-50 season in MLB history. Judge ranked second after mashing 58 home runs and winning his second AL MVP in three years.
“I just think, and I hate to admit it, that there is an anti-Yankee bias,” Kay said,
“I think everyone in Major League Baseball is absolutely in awe at the [skillset] exhibited by Ohtani,” Kay explained on his radio show. “And they should be-he’s one of the best baseball players ever. And so is Judge.”
It’s insulting to think Ohtani only finished first because voters dislike the Yankees. Ohtani recorded one of the greatest seasons we may ever see and led the Dodgers to a World Series title.
“You tell me, you tell me … how is Ohtani better than Judge?” Kay asked on his radio show.
According to Awful Announcing, Kay compared the two’s statistics. Judge had superior numbers in every category but stolen bases; Ohtani swiped 59 to Judge’s 10.
Baseball-Reference also valued Judge’s bWAR (Wins Above Replacement) at 10.8, nearly two runs higher than Ohtani’s 9.2. However, Ohtani is a full-time designated hitter, which reduces a player’s bWAR.
“On what planet can you say that Ohtani is better than Judge?” Kay questioned. “I don’t understand it.”
In fairness to Judge (and, by extension, Kay), Ohtani may rank above Judge because the Dodgers won the World Series. Ohtani hit .230 with three home runs and 10 RBI in his first playoff appearance.
Conversely, Judge hit .184 with three homers and nine RBI during the postseason.
Either way, Kay’s take is a strange one, and him floating the anti-Yankee theory is a step too far. We’ll see if he walks back those comments or doubles down.
