Pete Alonso Predicted to Decline Mets’ ‘Significant Offer’ for Blue Jays
The New York Mets have been trying to re-sign Pete Alonso to put him in a lineup with Juan Soto next season. However, no deal is in place, meaning another team could sign Alonso away from the Mets.
While making predictions for the remaining free agents, ESPN’s David Schoenfield predicted that Alonso would sign with the Toronto Blue Jays.
“The Blue Jays probably have the most to gain in signing Alonso, especially if they’re serious about moving Vladimir Guerrero Jr. to third base to accommodate Alonso,” wrote Schoenfield. “No doubt: Guerrero, Alonso and Anthony Santander would provide a power-packed middle of the order to a lineup that ranked 26th in the majors in home runs. If Bo Bichette bounces back from his lost 2024, then you have a team that can score enough runs to make the playoffs.”

A lineup with Alonso, Santander and Guerrero would be one of the scariest combinations in baseball. Alonso has a “significant offer” from the Mets, according to owner Steve Cohen.
“This is worse,” Cohen told reporters, comparing Alonso and Soto’s negotiations. “A lot of it is, we’ve made a significant offer. I don’t like the structures that are being presented back to us. I think it’s highly asymmetric against us, and I feel strongly about it.”
Alonso was a key player for the Mets during their improbable run to the National League Championship Series last season. He has hit more home runs than anyone in the National League since his debut in 2019. Losing the four-time All-Star would be a huge blow for the Mets.
The Blue Jays have struck out on multiple free agents this winter. They are not short on funds and may be willing to overpay to bring Alonso to Toronto.
