The Toronto Blue Jays are undoubtedly angry with the New York Mets this week. Will they get some payback in the coming days?

As the Winter Meetings were getting set to tip off, the Mets landed the biggest blow of the offseason, signing outfielder Juan Soto to a record-setting $765 million contract. The Blue Jays, who had hoped to land Soto for themselves, were unceremoniously spurned.

Toronto has been begging for a marquee free agent to sign with them for the past few years, and so far, they’ve mostly come up empty. And they desperately want things to change this winter, because their own superstar, Vladimir Guerrero Jr., will be a free agent at the end of 2025.

In short, the Blue Jays are desperate. And striking back at the Mets by signing away their longtime slugger Pete Alonso might be the most desperate move they could possibly make right now.

On Tuesday, Matt Johnson of Sportsnaut the Blue Jays would sign Alonso,  for a five-year, $130 million contract by Tim Britton of The Athletic.

“The Toronto Blue Jays have been trying to make a big move for two offseasons in a row. They struck out on both Shohei Ohtani and Juan Soto, which could put pressure on the front office to finally deliver,” Johnson said.

“Bringing Alonso to Toronto adds a premium bat to put alongside Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and with the Blue Jays keeping Bo Bichette, there would at least be hope for Toronto to rebound as a Wild Card contender in 2025.”

Alonso, 30, would give the Blue Jays game-changing pop behind Guerrero. The question would become whether Guerrero played more at third base, or if the Jays would simply use either or both of the two in the designated hitter slot at all times.

Committing to Alonso could either help the Blue Jays keep Guerrero or give them a solid replacement if he chooses to walk in free agency. But having already lost one blockbuster bidding war, Toronto knows securing any star from the Mets these days is no small task.
