Rangers: Ian McCall doesn’t hold back in ‘brutal’ assessment of Thelo Aasgaard’s display vs Dundee United

Rangers‘ 4-2 win against Dundee United on Saturday had many talking points, one being Thelo Aasgaard, whom Ian McCall wasn’t left impressed with.

The Bears have managed to close the gap on Hearts to one point following the win at Ibrox, and Aasgaard still seems to be receiving criticism despite scoring.

The attacking midfielder scored to make it 3-1 in the contest after the break, converting from close range after a ball from Djeidi Gassama.

It’s not been a smooth time in Glasgow for the Norwegian since arriving this summer, and though he’s shown signs of improvement, not everyone is convinced.

McCall was not impressed with Aasgaard‘s display, but continues to look forward to watching his team-mate, Mikey Moore.

Danny Rohl put trust in Aasgaard to start him, but had the international break not taken place, that may not have happened.

Regardless of what people thought of the 23-year-old’s performance, his goal was important, and he may have a crucial part to play for the remaining games this season.

As seen in the table above, Aasgaard had a lively game against Dundee United, but not all of his efforts were appreciated.

While speaking on Open Goal, former Gers man McCall gave his short verdict on Aasgaard’s display, but also explained how Moore keeps impressing him.

McCall said: “No, he [Aasgaard] wasn’t great, his corners were brutal.

“Moore, I thought, was really poor in the first 30 minutes, but you can’t let him get away with it. To be honest, I love the fact that he runs with the ball and tries to take people on at the halfway line.”

Interestingly, Aasgaard earned an 8.3 FotMob rating in the game, higher than any other player on the pitch.

Don’t let Aasgaard distract you from main Rangers issue

Some would say that Aasgaard has been something of a scapegoat this campaign, but if he helps bring the Scottish Premiership title, people won’t complain.

He managed to get more minutes than Andreas Skov Olsen, who was hooked by Rohl at halftime.

    • Skov Olsen was replaced by Gassama at the break
    • The Dane grabbed an assist for Dujon Sterling’s goal

Skov Olsen is starting to raise real concerns at Ibrox, despite his assist for Dujon Sterling’s goal. The Bears have a reported £86m buy option for the Wolfsburg star, which looks unlikely to be triggered with the way things are going.

A lot of sideways and backwards football comes from the 26-year-old, and Aasgaard has been much more impressive since the former’s winter arrival.

Albeit, Skov Olsen may just need some extra time to settle in, but that’s not a luxury that’s on his side right now.
