West Ham United: Lewis Orford is leaving Nuno Espirito Santo with just one choice after Under-21 displays

Lewis Orford will be able to stake his claim for a West Ham United first-team spot if he leads the Under-21s to success in the National League Cup final.

While Nuno Espirito Santo’s side fight for their Premier League status, the academy team has shone and can bring back silverware to the London Stadium on Tuesday night.

The only development side out of 16 participating academies to have progressed to the knockout stages of the competition, the young Hammers will next take on Boreham Wood.

Midfielder Orford faces an uncertain future at West Ham, but another promising performance in the final would prove, once again, that he is too good for youth level.

Does Lewis Orford have a future at West Ham?

Orford, 20, has been in the Irons’ academy since the age of five, and is widely believed to be one of the most talented graduates from the esteemed set-up.

However, this has not translated into a first-team breakthrough.

He began the campaign on loan at Stevenage but was recalled by West Ham after he played just 16 minutes in League One, a notable step backwards for him.

Showing wisdom and maturity beyond his years, Orford has been able to put that setback behind him, and now, he could win a trophy under U21 boss Greg Lincoln.

Since returning to East London in November, he has been a regular fixture in the starting XI, and even recorded a hat-trick of assists in a 5-1 National League Cup thumping of Aldershot.

There is no denying that he stands on a precipice, though. He is one of the more experienced members of the U-21 dressing room, but has played just three times at senior level.

That is doing his career no favours, and West Ham are likely to ship him out on loan again next season – another short-term decision that could actually hinder his development.

    West Ham’s next golden generation

The glare of the spotlight will be on wonderkid Josh Ajala during the cup final, and rightly so.

Shortly after signing a new contract until 2028, Ajala’s hype skyrocketed after he was named the Premier League 2 Player of the Month for February.

He has scored four goals in five National League Cup appearances, while he boasts 11 in total. Consequently, he cannot be far away from making his first-team bow under Nuno.

Silky midfielder Preston Fearon will also look to catch the boss’s eye, having played more minutes than any other for the Hammers U-21s this campaign.
