Regis Le Bris Explains Why Granit Xhaka Is the Perfect Fit for Sunderland’s Ambitious Project

Sunderland’s reported move for Granit Xhaka has sparked excitement and curiosity among supporters, and head coach Régis Le Bris has now offered insight into why the experienced midfielder is viewed as a key target for the club’s evolving project.

The Black Cats have been steadily rebuilding with a clear philosophy focused on dynamic football, youth development, and smart recruitment. However, Le Bris believes the squad also needs proven leadership and tactical maturity—qualities he sees in the former Arsenal F.C. captain.

Speaking about the potential arrival of Xhaka, Le Bris emphasized the importance of balance within the squad. Sunderland have invested heavily in young, energetic players in recent seasons, but the manager believes adding a seasoned professional could accelerate the team’s progress.

“Granit brings experience at the highest level,” Le Bris explained. “He has played in the Premier League and in European competitions for many years, and that kind of knowledge is extremely valuable for a developing group.”

Xhaka, who has also been a central figure for the Switzerland national football team, is widely respected for his leadership, composure, and tactical awareness. According to Le Bris, those attributes are exactly what Sunderland need as they continue pushing toward their long-term ambitions.

“He understands the rhythm of big matches,” the coach added. “When a team has many young players, you need someone who can organize, communicate, and control moments of the game. Granit has shown throughout his career that he can do this.”

Another reason Sunderland are interested in Xhaka is his versatility in midfield. The 31-year-old is known for his passing range, ability to dictate tempo, and defensive discipline. Le Bris believes these qualities would complement Sunderland’s existing midfield options and help stabilize the team during high-pressure moments.

Tactically, the French coach sees Xhaka as a player who could act as the team’s “reference point” in midfield. His ability to switch play, maintain possession, and read the game would allow Sunderland’s younger attacking players to express themselves with greater freedom.

“Football is about connections,” Le Bris said. “You need players who can link the lines and make the team function as a unit. Granit has this capacity to guide the structure of the team.”

Beyond the pitch, Sunderland’s management also values the mentality Xhaka would bring to the dressing room. Having captained clubs and played in major tournaments, he is seen as someone capable of setting standards in training and helping younger players handle pressure.

Le Bris believes that kind of influence could prove decisive as Sunderland aim to establish themselves among England’s most competitive sides once again.

“Ambition is important for this club,” he concluded. “But ambition also requires leadership, discipline, and experience. Players like Granit help transform potential into reality.”

While any deal would depend on negotiations and financial considerations, Sunderland supporters are already intrigued by the idea of seeing a player of Xhaka’s pedigree at the Stadium of Light. If the move materializes, it could represent one of the club’s most significant signings in recent years—and a clear signal of their intent to compete at a higher level.
