Keith Hackett reveals why Crysencio Summerville was not sent off in West Ham vs Brentford

Crysencio Summerville in action for West Ham vs Brentford.
Crysensio Summerville avoided a red card in West Ham’s FA Cup win over Brentford on Friday evening.

Summerville pushed Michael Kayode and conceded a penalty, which allowed the Bees to equalise and make it 2-2 in the FA Cup fifth-round clash, before the Hammers won on a penalties.

Some have suggested that the West Ham star should have been sent off for Denial of a Goalscoring Opportunity (DOGSO) in the London Stadium clash on 9 March.

However, Keith Hackett believes that is not the case for one specific reason.

Why was Summerville not sent off in West Ham win?

The ex-PGMOL chief was not having that Summerville should have been dismissed as he did not satisfy all the criteria for the foul to count as DOGSO.

Speaking exclusively to West Ham Zone, he said: “This is a clear foul and a penalty kick.

“The criteria for the denial of an obvious goal scoring opportunity has to fulfil the following criteria, the following must be considered, distance between the offence and the goal, general direction of the play, likelihood of keeping or gaining control of the ball and the location and number of defenders.

“Not all the required criteria for the offence of DOGSO has been fulfilled, the likelihood of keeping or gaining control is in doubt, not DOGSO for me.”

Why West Ham supporters can’t be angry with Summerville

Hammers supporters cannot be too angry with the Dutch star for giving the penalty away.

Yes, they would have likely been into the next round without his poor judgment, but he has kept them in the Premier League survival race recently with his unbelievable form.

He has been the difference maker, scoring five goals in his last eight league matches, so if anyone deserves not to be criticised, it is him.

The Irons’ focus should be the league anyway, so, the result in the domestic cup should not be too much of a concern for supporters.

Retaining their status as a top-flight club is the most important thing this season, a cup run would be a bonus, but it may also be a distraction for Nuno Espirito Santo’s side at a critical period.

Ultimately, it will matter very little in the context of their campaign, so Summerville’s indiscretion will not be remembered anytime soon, regardless of whether they stay up or go down to the Championship.
