West Ham’s owners have opened up on their Premier League survival fears after the team failed to take full advantage of results going in their favour in the relegation battle.

Things could have worked out far worse for West Ham as they stood at a relegation battle crossroads over the weekend – but they could have been a lot better too.

The Hammers played out a disappointing 0-0 draw at home against Bournemouth on Saturday night, failing to draw level on 27 points with 17th placed Nottingham Forest.

West Ham knew they could pile pressure on Forest and the likes of Spurs and Leeds with victory over the Cherries.

But Nuno Espirito Santo’s side only managed three shots on target from 20 attempts.

West Ham were left with mixed emotions when Forest and Spurs both lost on Sunday to Liverpool and Arsenal respectively.

While it was a point gained on both relegation rivals, the Hammers know it could and should have been more.

Supporters fear the team could be left cursing their failure to win games they are expected to.

Especially with tough away trips to Liverpool and Fulham up next in the Premier League.

As the dust settles on the weekend’s results, the club’s owners have been reviewing the situation.

That has dropped significantly in the last 12 or 13 years but analysts have warned all season that something like that figure may well be needed this season.

The Hammers still hold the record for the most points ever amassed by a relegated side on 42.

Now West Ham’s owners have revealed they believe Nuno and his team may need to match that figure to stay up.

“Internally we have looked at what is likely to be the points total needed to stay up this season,” the top spokesman for West Ham’s board exclusively told Hammers News.

“Based on each club’s remaining fixtures and other factors we believe for us to survive it COULD be as high as 41 or 42 points this season.”

With the Hammers currently on 25 points following the draw with Bournemouth, that would require another 17 points.

To get that total West Ham would have to win six of their last 11 games or the equivalent, such as win five and draw two.

During the great escape campaign of 2007, West Ham won seven of their last nine matches, so it is by no means impossible.

Recent form suggests West Ham are capable of getting 17 points, but only if performances and results are maintained all the way through to the end of May.

Nuno had privately targeted beating Bournemouth at home, Fulham away, Wolves at home, Crystal Palace away, Everton at home and Leeds at home to get West Ham to 41 points.

But the Hammers will now have to find the dropped points vs the Cherries elsewhere in the remaining games.

And, if the West Ham board’s forecast is correct, another point will be needed in addition to that too.

It is now looking like four teams fighting to avoid filling the final relegation spot from West Ham, Forest, Spurs and Leeds.
