West Ham United F.C.’s Federico Chiesa Twist Proves David Sullivan Has Completely Lost the Plot

West Ham and Federico Chiesa update shows why David Sullivan has lost the plot

West Ham wanted to sign Liverpool star Federico Chiesa in the winter transfer window.

Nuno Espirito Santo‘s side brought in the likes of Taty Castellanos, Pablo and Adama Traore to ease their attacking woes.

However, a report from Calciomercato on 16 February claimed that the London Stadium side were interested in Chiesa too.

It states that the Reds would have asked for between £13million and 17.5m to sell the Italian winger, which would have summed up David Sullivan‘s negligence.

Why would Chiesa deal have been bad for West Ham?

For starters, the potential fee is not a fair reflection of how Chiesa has performed this season, he has played 27 times, with six goal contributions, but only has a total minute count of 634.

The Hammers needed players with match fitness, who could come in and make an impact immediately to get them out of relegation trouble, and the 27-year-old would not have done that.

If Sullivan was actually legitimately interested in bringing in the 51-cap Italy international, it would have been another in a string of ill-fated moves which have put the Irons in the position that they are in now.

Chiesa signing could have led to Jarrod Bowen exit

Given that Chiesa is primarily a right winger, it would have led to further speculation about an exit for Jarrod Bowen.

Bowen has been one of the Hammers’ better players this season, with eight goals and three assists in 26 league matches so far this season.

Supporters in E20 would have been sent into meltdown had the potential England World Cup star been allowed to leave in the middle of a relegation battle, and the fact that Chiesa was targeted perhaps suggests it may have happened.

Why would Sullivan be targeting a right-winger, who will want to play a significant role, if Bowen’s future was secure?

If the East London side return for the Anfield ace in the summer, it could pave the way for the Three Lions ace to move on, which would be disastrous and likely lead to further protests from the fanbase.

Sullivan has not helped himself in recent years, and bringing in a player who cannot get into Arne Slot’s team regularly would have been the icing on the cake.
