Ross McCausland is sealing Rangers future in Cyprus – here’s why

Having joined Rangers‘ academy in the summer of 2019 from Northern Irish outfit Linfield for a reported figure of just £60,000, McCausland quickly began turning heads in Gers’ youth ranks.
After working his way up through the academy sides and into Rangers’ B team, the winger eventually started scraping around the fringes of the first-team squad from the 2021-22 season onwards.
However, it wouldn’t be until 2023-24 that he really got his big Ibrox break, and he would go onto play 39 times that year, scoring four goals and providing five assists.
But 2024-25 saw a drop in his minutes and production, and so in this season’s summer transfer window, he was sent out on loan to join Cypriot side Aris Limassol for the duration of the 2025-26 campaign.

Ross McCausland surely won’t be Rangers player for long
As per the terms of that loan deal, Aris Limassol have a conditional obligation to buy McCausland permanently if certain criteria is met during his loan stay there.
It’s been reported that it would see Rangers receiving a six-figure fee for the 22-year-old, but regardless of whether the conditions are met to trigger this deal or not, he’s probably sealing his Ibrox fate anyway this term.
So far this season, McCausland has made 17 Cyprus League appearances for Aris, scoring four goals and providing three assists.
Those numbers aren’t disastrous by any means, but it’s also not quite enough to really jump off the page, nor does it suggest that the Northern Ireland international is tearing Cypriot football up this season.
As per Sofascore, McCausland is averaging just 0.2 goals per game in Cyprus, is posting a 25 per cent crossing accuracy, has made three errors leading to opposition shots and has won just 29 per cent of his total duels.
Unfortunately for him, those just aren’t quite the numbers that will make Danny Rohl sit up and take notice of his performances, and may well mean he’s moving towards a summer transfer exit one way or another.
Rangers have too many quality wide players to accommodate McCausland
McCausland is contracted with Rangers until the summer of 2027, meaning that if Aris’ obligation to purchase him isn’t triggered this season, he could still have the chance to win his Gers place back.
However, Rohl is blessed with some quality wide options at Ibrox now, and ones that may well be sticking around too.
Rangers surely have a great chance of getting Mikey Moore back on loan for 2026-27, whilst they also have an £8.6m option to buy Andreas Skov Olsen from Wolfsburg, which Gers look likely to trigger after his positive start in Glasgow.

Add Oliver Antman and Djeidi Gassama to the mix too, and there’s at least four wingers that McCausland would surely be some way behind in the pecking order if they are to all remain at Ibrox next season.
So, it’s probably for the best, and increasingly likely, that McCausland seals a transfer away from Glasgow this summer.
