Danny Rohl risks Philippe Clement fate as ‘huge gamble’ fails at Rangers

Danny Rohl is coming under intense scrutiny after Rangers dropped points in the 1-1 draw against Motherwell at Fir Park on Wednesday.
Nicolas Raskin opened the scoring for Rangers, and they looked to be heading for a huge win at Fir Park when Lukas Fadinger was sent off.
However, Stephen Welsh’s 89th-minute equaliser leaves the Bears five points off the top of the table.
Fans after the match were furious with some of the players, with Djeidi Gassama and Youssef Chermiti singled out for their poor performances.
Rangers missed a huge chance to put more pressure on Hearts, and some of Rohl’s decisions against Motherwell are being questioned.

Danny Rohl was wrong to rest some of the new signings
The Daily Record’s Scott McDermott claimed that not starting some of the winter signings is something that ex-Rangers boss Philippe Clement would have done.
Ryan Naderi scored twice on his Ibrox debut, so eyebrows were raised when Chermiti started the match.
Andreas Skov Olsen and Tuur Rommens have also impressed when they have been given a chance, but both were left on the bench at Fir Park.
Although the Light Blues host Hearts at Ibrox on Sunday, the match against Motherwell was hardly the time to be giving players minutes for the sake of maintaining morale.
Rohl has paid the price for his mistakes, and now Rangers face an even bigger task in trying to topple the league leaders, starting against them on Sunday.

Clement and Rohl’s managerial records at Rangers
Speaking on the Daily Record Hotline Live on 12 February, McDermott couldn’t believe the starting line-up Rohl named.
He said: “When the teamsheet dropped last night, I thought it was an old lineup. I had to look at it again.
“I couldn’t believe that Rommens, Naderi, Skov Olsen, even [Emmanuel] Fernandez weren’t among those to start. It was a huge gamble, and Rohl got it wrong. The substitutions were also wrong.
“Resting players in these sorts of games has cost managers in the past, you think of Clement. He paid the price for that.”
Clement was sacked in February 2025 after a run of poor results, and he came under heavy fire for resting players in big matches.
There is no doubt that Rohl is doing a brilliant job at Rangers, and comparing him to Clement is definitely unfair at this stage.
The pressure of managing Rangers might be getting to Rohl
Before his spell in G51, he led Sheffield Wednesday, who were plagued by issues off the pitch, to a 12th-placed finish in the 2024-25 Championship season.
However, he has never had the experience of managing a club where winning every single game is a necessity.
At Rangers, you simply can’t pick and choose when to start all of your best players and when to rest them.
They should be able to deal with playing every four days, and if they aren’t, then that speaks to Rohl’s decision-making in the transfer window.
He’ll undoubtedly go with a full-strength team for Sunday’s match with Hearts, but anything other than a win would do serious damage to Rangers’ title hopes.
If that happens, we could see signs of Rohl starting to buckle under the pressure in Govan.
