Florida sheriff shuts down beach ‘takeovers’ months before Spring Break
As promoters begin planning for a “takeover” of Panama City Beach during Spring Break the Bay County Sheriff’s Office has issued a response.
“We’re aware of the online chatter. We know who you are, what you’re planning, and what you’re trying to attempt,” the sheriff’s office said on Facebook.
“Let’s be clear: there will be no “takeovers” in Bay County. Not our beach. Not our roads. Not our community. The Bay County Sheriff’s Office is fully staffed, fully prepared, and yes, we have plenty of jail space. If you come here looking to test the limits, understand this: you will lose that test.”
The sheriff’s office was responding to two promotional pages, that appear to be created recently, advertising events during Spring Break, which is months away, at Panama City Beach.
A shooting occurred last year on March 29 involving three Alabama victims who suffered non-life threatening injuries.
The alleged perpetrators were identified as teenagers also from Alabama.
After that incident and another case involving gunfire, Panama City Beach Police Chief J.R. Talamantez said, “Panama City Beach can no longer be a spring break town.”
Over the last couple of years several Florida Spring Break destinations have implemented stricter public safety measures citing concerns of violence and chaos during the season.
The Bay County Sheriff’s Office said that new county ordinances will be enacted during ”high impact periods“ including:
- No minors allowed in establishments that sell alcohol from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. in high impact areas
- Temporary curfews, with certain exceptions, for unaccompanied minors between 8 p.m. to 5 p.m.
- Consequences for parents that allow curfew violations
- No vacation rentals for anyone under 21
