Keith Hackett slams PGMOL over Cristian Romero incident in Tottenham defeat vs Man United

Tottenham boss Thomas Frank and Cristian Romero.
Manchester United’s 2-0 win over Tottenham was marred by controversy.

Bryan Mbuemo and Bruno Fernandes secured three points for the Red Devils at Old Trafford on 7 February.

However, Spurs were forced to play with 10-men for the majority of the contest, with Cristian Romero dismissed for a reckless challenge on Casemiro.

The decision changed the trajectory of the contest, and Keith Hackett has slammed the PGMOL, the organisation that is responsible for the referees.

What did Keith Hackett say about Romero red card?

Hackett believes that the red card decision was correct, but thinks that Tottenham can be angry with a lack of consistency across the Premier League.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, he said: “Romero has committed a serious foul play challenge that rightly received a red card.

“However, we have witnessed similar challenges that have gone unpunished.

“What is required from the PGMOL is a consistency of interpretation.”

Why Romero should not be captain of Tottenham

Romero is far too reckless to be the leader of a football club that is trying to go for trophies and rise up to the upper echelons, like Spurs are trying to do.

The sending off was his fourth red card in the Premier League, which is the joint-most for the Lilywhites in the history of the competition, with Younes Kaboul.

They need someone with a level head, who can handle the pressure of the big occasion, not someone who always crumbles and makes silly mistakes that put his team in harm’s way.

StatsRomeroRomero’s league stats this season.Hackett is correct, Spurs can complain about the consistency of other decisions, but they cannot complain about Romero making ridiculous errors all the time.

After his rant about transfers in midweek, going and getting himself sent off, and contributing even further to the problem that he was originally complaining about, that is not captain behaviour, it is as simple as that.

He constantly lets the club down, and he is not a good example to be the main man in the squad, and the sooner Frank and Co realise that, the better.

If they fail to do so, they may never reach the level that they want to, because he will continue to lose his head on the biggest stage.
