West Ham could repeat something that hasn’t happened since 2010 vs Burnley

West Ham will hope to take a huge step with victory against Burnley on Saturday.

Nuno Espirito Santo‘s side were brought back to down to earth in the 3-2 loss to Chelsea, after two consecutive wins against Tottenham and Sunderland has brought some hope.

The Hammers sit 18th in the Premier League, six points away from safety, and they will be looking to reduce that margin this weekend.

The London Stadium outfit could do something that they have not done since 2010, which would sum up their current predicament.

What could West Ham do against Burnley?

West Ham’s clash with Burnley is vital, they need to start picking up points, with just 14 matches left to play until the conclusion of the season.

However, they could lose to all three promoted sides for the first time since the 2009-10 campaign, when they were defeated by Birmingham City, Burnley and Wolves.

    Date Opponent Venue Result
    15 August 2009 Wolves Molineux 2-0 (W)
    28 November 2009 Burnley Upton Park 5-3 (W)
    12 December 2009 Birmingham City St Andrew’s 1-0 (L)
    6 February 2010 Burnley Turf Moor 2-1 (L)
    10 February 2010 Birmingham City Upton Park 2-0 (W)
    23 March 2010 Wolves Upton Park 1-3 (L)

The Hammers vs promoted sides in 2009-10.The Irons have already tasted defeat at the hands of Sunderland and Leeds United this season, and Nuno will be hoping to avoid repeating history on this occasion.

Why West Ham should be confident ahead of Burnley clash

For starters, the Clarets are five points adrift of the East London side, winning just three matches all season, drawing six and losing 15.

Their last win in the league came against bottom-dwellers Wolves in October, and only Rob Edwards’ side and Nottingham Forest have scored fewer goals than the Turf Moor outfit.

The E20 outfit also won the last time that the sides met, in November, with goals from Callum Wilson, Tomas Soucek and Kyle Walker-Peters in a 3-2 victory.

    Opponent Result
    Newcastle 1-3 (L)
    Brighton 2-0 (L)
    Manchester United 2-2 (D)
    Liverpool 1-1 (D)
    Tottenham 2-2 (D)
    Sunderland 3-0 (L)

Burnley’s last six in the league. However, it is important that they do not take Scott Parker’s side for granted; they can be dangerous, and it could be a repeat of the Wolves loss if the Hammers are complacent.

If the Irons can come away with a win, and other results go their way, with Leeds and Nottingham Forest playing each other, they may find themselves just three points away from getting out of the relegation zone.

That is the ideal scenario for anyone associated with Nuno’s side, whether it happens, and they get the perfect outcome, only time will tell.
