Not only because Niclas Fullkrug will spend the campaign at AC Milan, but West Ham are in desperate need of a striker in the winter window.

However, there are also several other positions that the Hammers are likely to try to address in a bid to strengthen their chances of survival this season.

The latest update concerns Sassuolo winger Lauriente, with West Ham reportedly keen on a deal.

West Ham return to Lauriente pursuit

A report from Area Napoli claims that West Ham have expressed an interest in signing Lauriente through the use of intermediaries.

The former France Under-21 international has scored three goals and assisted two for Sassuolo so far this season, having featured 17 times.

Last year, he registered 24 goal contributions and played a crucial role in their promotion back to the Serie A.

Sunderland looked set to announce his arrival in the summer, until a late change in the deal prevented confirmation, though a move to the Premier League could still be on the cards.

It’s claimed a deal in the region of £21million would be enough to bring him to the London Stadium, with Napoli also keen.

Lauriente update makes a lot of sense for West Ham

Aside from the need for a striker, which simply has to be the priority, there is a strong case to be made for Nuno Espirito Santo having very few, if any, solid options on the left flank.

Crysencio Summerville is the Hammers’ only real option there, and based on the fact he’s managed just one goal in his 34 appearances since joining, there is a clear need for an upgrade.

Lauriente, who was previously linked with a move to the London Stadium, would provide that, but given West Ham’s battle against relegation, there will also be a case that they need to target proven Premier League players.

While the 27-year-old is certainly a quality option, the Irons could be set to go down a different route.
