Newcastle defender Dan Burn is facing up to six weeks out of action after suffering a punctured lung and broken rib against arch-rivals Sunderland.

Burn has been criticised by Newcastle fans for his recent performances, but was handed a 15th league start of the season in the Wear-Tyne derby at the Stadium of Light on Sunday.

A tense affair saw Sunderland come away with all three points as Nick Woltemade headed into his own net just after the break and the hosts earned north-east bragging rights.

Burn was forced off through injury in the first half after a clash with Black Cats defender Nordi Mukiele left him in agony and needing treatment.

The full extent of his problem has now been revealed and will serve as a huge blow to Newcastle amid their current injury issues and a busy winter schedule.

Burn will be out for six weeks after Mukiele clash

Burn was challenged by Mukiele in the 34th minute of the ill-tempered clash, as the England international won the ball but was caught late by his opposite number while they both slid on the floor.

He had to be substituted just before the interval after struggling to shake the issue off, and Howe confirmed after the game that he had been “struggling to breathe” and had gone to the hospital as a result.

The Daily Mail’s Craig Hope has now revealed that Burn has suffered a punctured lung and broken rib and will be sidelined for up to six weeks.

There is reportedly still hope that specialist treatment will speed up his recovery process, and the Magpies certainly need that to be the case, given the numerous defenders currently occupying their treatment room.

Sven Botman, Kieran Trippier, Jamaal Lascelles and Emil Krafth are also injured, leaving Howe with just four fit senior defenders as it stands.

The Newcastle games that Burn is set to miss with key Premier League and Champions League ties ahead

Burn has started in all of the Magpies’ Champions League outings so far this term, as well as being first-choice at the back for league games, but that will all change for upcoming matches.
