Newcastle United’s South American shopping could begin with £16.6m midfielder

Newcastle United are searching for a new midfielder, and it seems they could have found the ideal man for the job by shopping in South America.

It’s no secret what Newcastle want in January. Eddie Howe has even said he needs a midfielder and a full-back.

Prem proven or future prospects? What do you want from Newcastle in the transfer market…

“We have tried to utilise the foreign market without probably having the expertise in previous seasons that we need to make consistently good decisions in those markets.

“I think Ross will give us all of that. I think he will use his vast experience and build up his team and his method of work.”

While hardly any names have been suggested for the latter, we’ve seen an abundance of supposed targets come and go with regards to the midfield role.

A fresh name is now on the radar, and the good news is he won’t cost the Newcastle United owners all that much money.

    Jorge Carrascal price revealed

A report from Brazilian outlet O Dia claims that Newcastle are one of the clubs tracking Flamengo midfielder Jorge Carrascal.

Marseille are also interested and it’s thought Roberto De Zerbi has given the club approval to move ahead and try to strike a deal for the 27-year-old.

Newcastle, meanwhile, are not quite as advanced in their pursuit, but they have been watching Carrascal closely.

Apparently, Flamengo will demand around €19m (£16.6m) for the Colombian. They paid just under €13m for him in 2024.

Carrascal has helped Flamengo win the Brazilian title and the Copa Libertadores since he joined, and his club are now braced for offers in 2026.

How would you actually feel if Newcastle United DIDN’T sign a player in January?!

It would cause a lot of talk on social media…

Newcastle United transfer strategy is clear

These links to Jorge Carrascal make perfect sense for Newcastle. Ross Wilson’s plan is to shop abroad, and we know he will try to utilise his networks in South America.

Primarily, it was expected Newcastle would look at younger players from the foreign market, but someone with the level of experience Carrascal has could be the best of both worlds for the Magpies.

He’s old enough to step straight in and make an impact at Newcastle, while the fact he is playing in Brazil does mean he won’t command as big a transfer fee as the likes of Scott McTominay, Elliot Anderson, or Conor Gallagher.

There are still rumours about Alex Toth, who could cost £13m, and Kevin Danois might cost upwards of £10m, too. But, they’re both a lot younger than Carrascal, and Newcastle may well be tempted to pay that little bit more for a more ready-made option.
