Micky van de Ven has been a standout player for Tottenham in the opening months of this season. 

Van de Ven scored a goal of the season contender in Tottenham’s 4-0 victory over FC Copenhagen in the Champions League earlier this month.

The Netherlands international’s recent performances have led to speculation around his future in north London.

Real Madrid have been linked with a move to sign Van de Ven, whose agent previously suggested the centre-back is good enough to play for the Spanish giants.

However, Tottenham are planning to offer Van de Ven a new contract to persuade him to remain with Thomas Frank’s side, with his current deal set to expire in 2029.

Tottenham owners set to increase spending

Former Man City financial adviser Stefan Borson exclusively told Football Insider Tottenham’s owners could offer Van de Ven an improved deal as part of their plans to spend more on the club’s wage bill.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider about whether Van de Ven could become Tottenham’s highest earner, Borson said: “He could be, especially given the ownership situation.

“I think you’re going to see a change of approach, which can only mean spending more money on wages and signings.

“I think those players that are in the right place at the right time at Spurs are going to see the upside, and he’s a perfect example.” 

Tottenham signed Van de Ven from Wolfsburg in a deal worth up to £43million in the summer of 2023.

The 24-year-old has gone on to make 68 appearances for the club, with 17 of those outings coming this season.

How much do Tottenham spend on wages?

There has been calls for Tottenham to increase their wage bill after Levy previously kept their spending in check.

In terms of the top five wage bills in the Premier League, Spurs fall outside of that list, with Man City, Liverpool, Chelsea, Arsenal and Man United all paying their players more money.

Tottenham’s latest published accounts for 2023-24 revealed their wage bill dropped from £251m in 2022-23 to £222m.

That figure made up 42 per cent of Spurs’ overall revenue, which stood at £528m.
